I am looking to get a new single row plug bag.. leaning towards 4 - 3" tubes.. I have read just about everything I could find on the different manufactures and most of these bags are made the same way using the same material. All the bags offer most of the same features and are roughly the same size.. so how does one make a choice.. I was hoping to get some opinions of people who own and use these bags..

MAK:
301

Commando:
250

Ebb Point:
426

AS Hunter Elite:
465

Having owned an Ebbpoint and an original (non aquaskinz) Hunter Bag - i can say firsthand that their is absolutely nothing wrong with either of them and they are tough as hell, drain well, stay closed when in the water, and their materials (thick dacron) hold up against unabashed abuses such as sliding on rocks in both Montauk and Block Island, salt corrosion, never being cleaned, left out in the rain for several nights, and thrown around with complete and utter disregard. Never owned a Mak or a Commando and know nothing about them so wont comment on them.

In full dislcosure - I sold both the Hunter and Ebbpoint bags for no other reason than I found myself still gravitating to my old white single row coastal featherlite bag and my original blue van staal double row bag (the one with the old school leather patch). I guess having fished those bags for years and years, the other newer bags felt a little like cheating on your wife - their is nothing wrong with the wife, she is great and thier was certainly no love lost, perhaps looking a little shabby at times, (hey, signs of wear and a little rusty discoloration here and there doesnt hurt though, lol) - but the old bag is the one for me, pun intended. Curiousity got the best of me and I ultimately gave in to the seduction of the "homemade" Hunter Bag and I will say - it was a fun ride and I wasnt dissappointed one bit, not for a second - but ultimatley home is where the heart is and she had to go.

It has to be close to twenty years and neither the coastal featherlite or the vs bag has a rip or tear on them - and they really have been fished hard, and often, from sea to shining sea, and then treated poorly on land to boot. I'm rough on my gear and not one to treat my surfbag like a gucci bag - even if they are at eerily similar price points, lol.

Not sure you'll find an original Hunter, and your definitely wont find anyone parting with their coastal bag or original vs, but I can firmly recommend the Ebbpopint 3 tube bag without reservation. Similiar material, construction, double and triple stitching, etc - i sold mine after three years of beating up on it and the person buying it said it looked "pretty new" - that bag had everythig but a bullet shot at it, lol.

In general I like Mak, and voted that way.

Take a look, however, at the Comando 4 tube cube. I just got one of those to wear on my belt wetsuiting.

Some guys will wear a pair of two tubes they slide around either side for this. I, however, like to keep my boga, knife, pliers, and rod holder all fixed on my right side. Wanted more than just 2 tubes on my left side. Also was concerned about access to 2 tubes so close to the body. As such, I went to four tubes that can all be worn on the left, 2 of which are on the outside further away from the body and easier to access. If you set it down, it's also more stable and less prone to fall over vs. 4 tube skinny.

I'll be buying one as soon as they come out so I'll be able to let you know the name.. I'm so bad with names.. LOL.. I have looked them over very well and I can tell you they are just as good quality wise as the other top names. I'm using a Surfcaster bag and it's not the greatest but It has lasted and it works. These new bags that are out now are so light and well made I don't think that you can really go wrong!! I have looked at the Commando bags and they are nice. I just haven't used these to give a honest "this is the best" Of course I'm sure there aren't many who have used all of these bags.. You would be broke!!

AS Elite Cobra, well made available in stores for purchase and you can fit their 3 inch round tubes in them if you want. Also use an AS Elite Double Barrel equally as well made.
Can post pictures if you want to see.

I would've said MAK since that's what I own but now that he's not making the same bags I would vote commando. There's a HUGE difference between the MAK Surfcasting bag and the cheaper "make angler" bag. Although I think Tom at commando is making a cheap bag too. Just be sure in the end you know exactly what you want is what you get. People are getting angler bags thinking they're the Surfcasting series.

As far as my MAK goes, I've got the 8 tube Surfcasting bag and love it wink.gif

Perfectly happy with my 8 tube AS Cobra Elite, hook's don't get stuck in it and you can carry way more than you'll need in it. I had planned on getting a Commando, but I got lucky and scored a great end of the season deal at my local B&T. I couldn't in my head justify not getting it for $150. smile.gif
