During our 2010 Blue Rage Campaign in the Mediterranean, Sea Shepherd crewmembers set 800 Bluefin tuna free by cutting the net of a pen that was holding what we are certain was an illegal catch. Several factors led to this suspicion and Sea Shepherd remains confident that the Bluefin being held were illegal due to the following facts:
The fish were obtained after the closing date of the fishing season
Many of the fish within the pen were juveniles
The fishing vessel did not have an inspector on board
The Captain refused to show us any paperwork on the catch
The fishermen were dishonest concerning where they obtained the fish
As ICCAT (International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna) patrol vessels would not respond to Sea Shepherd’s notification of violations and were not patrolling the area, these fishermen were free to fish illegally and unsustainably. Sea Shepherd believes that the actions taken were vital for the survival of the Bluefin species.
The tuna fishing companies in Malta are notorious for litigation. They have managed to silence every media outlet in Malta that has criticized them by filing lawsuits against the media companies and individual reporters.
In Jan 2012 a single Bluefin caught a record price of $736,000, with financial incentive like this it is impossible to expect common sense to prevail. As the Bluefin numbers dwindle, their market value increases. Bluefin numbers have decreased by over 90% since the early 1900’s. In the Mediterranean, that number is closer to 97%.
Fish and Fish are using their blood money to take Sea Shepherd to court in an attempt to protect this lucrative industry that is literally fishing the Bluefin tuna, a magnificent creature, to extinction. The trial begins May 28th in London, England. Stand with us against this greed and corruption and help Sea Shepherd save the Bluefin Tuna from extinction.
