What's the story with Newell?

Are they still in business? Where do you buy parts? Last I heard the new owner was moving to a new building but I don't see reels being delivered.

Try this Frank

The Newell reels are now being made by Valley Manufacturing in Sun Valley, CA. You can still deal with Norma Cortez (who used to work for Newell and took care of the parts orders) she now works for Valley. The number is 818-504-6085 and fax # 818-504-6125

I've heard that their future is very much up in the air and for the time being they are basically out of business. They have not been making new reels recently and there really aren't any plans to do so in the near future.

Here's a copy and paste from a popular west coast tackle distributor;

Caution - while we have been proud to represent Newell for many years, the firm changed hands after Carl's passing. The new owner has great plans for the future of this well respected firm, however we have experienced significant delays with respect to filling of orders. At the present time we have NO reels in stock, with no firm answer from the factory about when we might see more arrive - the last answer we received was that it would be two months before ANY PRODUCT would be produced. (SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER...it is now January as of this writing and no new stock has been produced.)

My understanding is that after Carl Newell's death, the family sold the company to Valley Manufacturing. After several months of production by Valley Manufacturing, someone in the Newell family contested the sale of the company in probate court. The court issued a cease and desist order to Valley Manufacturing until things could be settled. My understanding is that the issue is still being reviewed. If any of you have gone through probate, you already know this can take quite some time.

Hopefully, things get settled sooner than later and Valley Manufacturing can get back to the business of making and selling reels.

I am advised that all machinery, jigs, etc., are boxed and the business will probably be sold. And my guess is that future Newells, if any, will be made in China.

Carl never made any money on the reels. They were almost a hobby business; the aerospace industry is where he made his real living.

They are obviously good reels but time has passed them by. When Valley bought Newell there was talk of updating the product line. That has since faded. They did do a run of clear 220 not too long ago, was very interesting.

At what point do they become collector items?

Plain old newells? - maybe in a 100 years. They made a ton of them. There were a few limited runs the past few years, they might be worth something some day.

Ugh...not what I wanted to hear.frown.gif

I must have at least 8 Newells that I use regularly. I might need to think twice about abusing them since parts are beginning to get scarce.
