Help Fill My Plug Bag

Guys,

Googan here in the process of prepping for some first-time surf pluggin.  I have a 9 ft Tsunami 5-Star spinning rod and will be throwing mostly surface and shallow running plugs from the beach or jetty.  I haven't even found a reel yet, but you can assume its a low-end spinning reel like a Tica Scepter, 704z, Shimano Spheros, etc.

My plug bag is some generic single-row bag with 5 tubes and I currently have the following plugs based upon a search of SOL threads on the subject:

1) Tsunmai Talking Popper - white and chartreuse.

2) Tsunami 5-inch Floating Popper - silver/blue.

3) Bomber Blurple - Bomber Schoolbus - these fit in the same tube.

4) .....?......

5)......?......

So what plugs or bucktails, or Sluggos, or whatever, would you fill the remaining tubes with in order to cover the bases as much as possible?

On a side-note, I may be achieving the googan world record for cheapest (but hopefully usable) first-time Beach config LOL.  This site sure has saved me a tonne of trial and error expense:

Surf Bag - $17.00 at online auction.

Tsunami 5-Star Rod - $20.00 on sale at Cabelas

Reel, Backing, Braid, Leaders - (may put a little more into this purchase)

Plugs - $50 (total budget)

SPRO Swivels/snaps - $5.00

Fish Grip - $13.00 at Cabelas.

total (before Reel and lines) = $105

Now to find a decent new or used reel.  (Gotta get my posts up to access BST  :)

Thanks Guys - any help is appreciated.

Buying plugs is certainly a disease. I would stay away from Hogys and sluggos until comfortable with what you are doing. Swim shad, bucktails, and some swimmers (SP minnows, bombers, etc) those are a good start. When i started a few years ago, i tried to get as many plugs and lures as i could. Problem is you dont learn how to fish them all well, get some basics and learn how to swim them in different conditions and then fill the holes for what conditions the plugs you have dont fill. just my 2cents.

^^ I didnt even notice it didnt get censored, I guess anal is acceptable in SOL....

Thanks for input guys.  My intent is to upgrade over time, but want to get on the water and start learning.  Which, to me, is a big part of the enjoyment and satisfaction.

I was already looking at some darters, swim shads, and a red and white cordell popper. Looks like I'm generally in the right ball park.

Greatly appreciated.

Yes, definitely try and stay away from the custom plugssmile.gif.  That said, add some daiwa sp minnows to your bag.  Reasonable price, great casters and definite fish catchers.

If you pick up a bag of those hooks with the green tubes on them you can change those castmasters from minnow looking tins to sandeel looking ones very quickly.

For my area here in the Bay, the cheapest, but perhaps most productive thing you can throw is a white 5-6" twister tail, on a white lead head.  The weight depends on the current, tide, and how deep you're in.  I've caught more fish on plugs, because I like throwing plugs more and spend more time throwing them.  A white on white twister tail never disappoints though, and is about as cheap as it gets.
