DirtNap
Guys, Googan here in the process of prepping for some first-time surf pluggin. I have a 9 ft Tsunami 5-Star spinning rod and will be throwing mostly surface and shallow running plugs from the beach or jetty. I haven't even found a reel yet, but you can assume its a low-end spinning reel like a Tica Scepter, 704z, Shimano Spheros, etc. My plug bag is some generic single-row bag with 5 tubes and I currently have the following plugs based upon a search of SOL threads on the subject: 1) Tsunmai Talking Popper - white and chartreuse. 2) Tsunami 5-inch Floating Popper - silver/blue. 3) Bomber Blurple - Bomber Schoolbus - these fit in the same tube. 4) .....?...... 5)......?...... So what plugs or bucktails, or Sluggos, or whatever, would you fill the remaining tubes with in order to cover the bases as much as possible? On a side-note, I may be achieving the googan world record for cheapest (but hopefully usable) first-time Beach config LOL. This site sure has saved me a tonne of trial and error expense: Surf Bag - $17.00 at online auction. Tsunami 5-Star Rod - $20.00 on sale at Cabelas Reel, Backing, Braid, Leaders - (may put a little more into this purchase) Plugs - $50 (total budget) SPRO Swivels/snaps - $5.00 Fish Grip - $13.00 at Cabelas. total (before Reel and lines) = $105 Now to find a decent new or used reel. (Gotta get my posts up to access BST Thanks Guys - any help is appreciated.
dschaufler
Easy on referring to the 704 as cheep (one of the best). I would also buy a SS red and white popper. I've caught more fish on that color than any others.
dominioncaster
Get some rubber shads and either sluggos or hogys. Also a mag darter wouldn't hurt. Dumb all over with a little ugly on the side.
Tman1
Yeah a 2 3/8 SS Popper, some storm type shads, a couple white bucktails 1 to 1 1/2 oz. a couple 1 -2 oz tins.
Fishalicious
If you're looking to keep it on the cheap over the long term, learn to fish with bucktails and get comfortable fishing at night. Kooky
Buying plugs is certainly a disease. I would stay away from Hogys and sluggos until comfortable with what you are doing. Swim shad, bucktails, and some swimmers (SP minnows, bombers, etc) those are a good start. When i started a few years ago, i tried to get as many plugs and lures as i could. Problem is you dont learn how to fish them all well, get some basics and learn how to swim them in different conditions and then fill the holes for what conditions the plugs you have dont fill. just my 2cents. ^^ I didnt even notice it didnt get censored, I guess anal is acceptable in SOL.... PilotMan25
Tsunami shads, few Ava 17s and an SP minnow or 2 would come in handy.
PilotMan25
Also, as was stated. If you are going to continue to keep it cheap I'd advise trying to stay away from the custom wood then. It's an addiction for sure. Everytime I go in the BST the kids college fund takes a hit.
DirtNap
Thanks for input guys. My intent is to upgrade over time, but want to get on the water and start learning. Which, to me, is a big part of the enjoyment and satisfaction. I was already looking at some darters, swim shads, and a red and white cordell popper. Looks like I'm generally in the right ball park. Greatly appreciated.

Yes, definitely try and stay away from the custom plugs. That said, add some daiwa sp minnows to your bag. Reasonable price, great casters and definite fish catchers. Keep It Simple Stupid... Hardcore
Bomber pencil poppers are a great bargain. You can load it with bird shot to increase distance. You can also find kastmaster replicas on eBay cheap. I suggest the 1.5-2 oz. I'm 1 post away from being an Internet sharpie
DirtNap
I noticed the Kastmasters were on sale at cabelas in PA. I'll have a second look. Thanks.
RedJeep
If you pick up a bag of those hooks with the green tubes on them you can change those castmasters from minnow looking tins to sandeel looking ones very quickly. Buster3479
For my area here in the Bay, the cheapest, but perhaps most productive thing you can throw is a white 5-6" twister tail, on a white lead head. The weight depends on the current, tide, and how deep you're in. I've caught more fish on plugs, because I like throwing plugs more and spend more time throwing them. A white on white twister tail never disappoints though, and is about as cheap as it gets.
bbfish
Like others have said if you want to stay on the inexpensive side...dont go into the BST scooping up lefty's and GRS. But don't be shy of picking up some of the less expensive wood like a gibbs danny and pencil. Both work very well.
