Puerto Rico

Hi Guys:

My Wife wants to plan a family vacation there. I know there are loads of lagoons full of the typical cast of tropical critters, but from what I can see...you need a guide with a boat to be able to fish there.

R there ways to get into some of this fishing on your own?? Most of the Island guides are in the $4-500 range for a 4 hr venue. While I could swing maybe 1 trip....Multiple trips are not in the budget. We are looking at staying in San Juan.
I don't need to fish for 100+ pound tarpon to have a blast, jacks, snappers, and baby tarpon are fine...and I would even prefer to do it with my own flys and tackle.

I have read that PR also bosts some manmade lakes with Peacock bass in it so even FW or a little of both would be fine.

Any suggestions.

Depending on where you are in San Juan if you are near any of the beaches snook and tarpon can be found in the mornings, also any river inlets or outlets are good spot to find tarpon. For lagoons I have fished some of them in San Juan by kayak, tarpon up to 50#s and snook are very very common. I would suggest renting a kayak and exploring in some of the back bays, be carefull though. San Juan is not the safest of places.
