The Most Awful Thing I Ever Saw Was _________.

The most awful thing I ever saw was a crack addict on a TV show about the crack epidemic.

The woman was broken in spirit; the horrible crack had ravaged her body and stolen her health.

She was only in her late 30s but appeared to be a sickly and dying crone.

During one of my clinical rotations, this woman had necrotic tissue over more than half of her foot (I believe this was a diabetic related complication) and the doctor had told her that they wanted to do a 'below the knee' amputation. She was in her mid 60's and wanted nothing to do with that, even after the doctor told her declining the treatment would be lethal. She basically didn't want to go through a long rehab process and into what she considered an 'uncertain' future. So basically there was a battery of psych tests ordered to see if they woman was competent enough to declare herself DNR...The most 'awful' (or difficult) part wasn't the necrotic tissue, etc...it was watching a woman basically chose to die over accepting a treatment plan which would allow her to live basically a normal life (with a few modifications)

But I have to say that thankfully, I found out during my next clinical shift she had a change of heart once it had a chance to sink in, and she had the procedure done...in fact, she was still there and took the opportunity to go say 'hi' to her

They teach you a lot about 'altered' self image and patients - and this was the first time I saw it come to life right before my very eyes

I saw my son being born.  I didn't mean to.  I looked away from my wife's painful, contorted face and the bastards at the hospital had a mirror on the wall.  Sadistic bastards.

Some men are so traumatized by witnessing their wife give birth that they can no longer have sex with her.

Happily, such traumatization is uncommon.

On the plus side, nothing is more wonderful than a newborn's luminous eyes.

The burial of my friends infant child.

I can't think of anything that could be worse than a parent having to bury their own child - it's the worst thing I've ever saw, and for me that means only in terms of nightmares that weren't real...I would not kill myself, but somehow believe that would kill me, nonetheless

one of the most awful things i saw firsthand was when a man died in my arms once. maybe 15-20 yrs ago. he took a header down the basement steps while i was wiring a pool next door. the maid came running over yelling help. we ran over and found him on the floor. his head was cracked wide open, and he was taking his last violent breaths as i tried wrapping his head with my shirt as my boss administered cpr. i'll spare the details. then one last gurgle.

the first responding emts told us that although a valiant attempt, he never had a chance. i'm sure its paltry in comparison to some of you guys who have seen some real firsthand horror; i mean you serviceman, emt's, cops and firemen etc. who have to deal with human ugliness on a daily basis, but the feeling that i got the second he stopped living has really never vacated. and the feeling that i knew his wife and kids were probably having a normal day the same exact time we knew he was gone still drops my stomach a few floors.

I agree Albacized, I can't think of anything worse. in the Long Island forum a young man just lost his life in accident, its very sad. I can't imagine carrying on without my son and feel for anyone that has lost a child. You must lose a part of yourself and must never be the same.... bless our children....

Wasn't a 9/11 related incident, was it? My brother is a member of the NYPD and saw that happen on that horrible day

In the nyc jail system. Bless your brother I'd never do that job....

The burial of my friends infant child.

for me, there is no worse thing. my uncle lost his first at 18 months to s.i.d.s. never recup'ed.

i swear not a day has gone by in my little ones' life where i didnt check on her multiple times during the night. i am neurotic in that aspect. to those who have to bury a child i hold with the most utter sympathy.

9/11 is also another given for most of us. and of course, a death of a loved one is always up there with each of us personally.

On 9/11, foreigners (European) were producing a documentary on the NYFD I think it was.

Then came the attack.

Later on, the documentarians saw pregnant women who had jumped to their death and burst open when they hit the ground.

That carnage was so ghastly that they decided not to record it; or if they did, they destroyed the recordings.
