SANDY HOOK CLOSURE

Looks like the tip of the hook will be closed for "a couple of weeks" due to dredging. I called the ranger station @732 872 5900 and they confirmed this.

Well........i guess it's over.
They'll be dredging the channel and if you ever seen what they do to the water...........well............Forgetaboutit.

The only thing near the tip is the Sandy Hook Channel, how does that affect the beach fishermen?
They're obviously going to widen and deepen the channel / Rip...........in front.........it has become narrow after a good few storms that have deposited sand and increased the land mass there.

I did not see a tip in SH for the last few years as a result of the beach replenishment...Are they going to uncover it?

It think last year or the year before they were dredging but they did not close it...

Yeah..............I heard they hired Geraldo Rivera to find it.

So, are they putting the sand up on the beach right there?

My friend and I were the last guys to be fishing the tip on last Friday, before the closed the tip. The dredge was real close to the shore, a spin rod could hit the thing, plus it was not dredging the channel but to the beach side of the green buoy the entire length of the tip. With the water getting dirtier we packed it in and headed for the K Lot. On the way out the ranger stopped us as we came to the end of the sand trail. She asked how many people were there and we told we were the last but on bait fishermen was still near the tip. She said the captain of the dredge called to have us leave while the work. The boat does work thru the night I've noticed. I heard three months but that was not told to me by the Park Services. No sand being dumped on the beach while we were there, maybe they'll take it to MB and replenish the beach there or Sea Bright.

Apparently there are some sink holes that open up on the edge of the beach. They're worried that someone will fall in if they get to close or will stumble on one in the dark.

I wasn't happy to find out about the closure yesterday. I finally decided to go out with only a flyrod. I made myslef leave the spinning gear behind, belted on a stripping basket (the bastard child of one I made out of a dish pan and zip ties that is), and walked out carrying the lightest plug I have ever carried. 1/2 a mile later I had to U turn and change plans.

Well that makes a little bit more sense as far as making fishermen leave. Certainly wouldn't do to have a stretch of waterline collapse in to the dredge hole with a bunch of guys standing on it.
