Yep, one of the most commonly farmed fish. They do well in a tank/pen environment because they're basically shiteaters.
only certain tilapia are farm raised. This is not a common species. They are from west africa. They are extremely intelligent and aggressive aquarium fish. Aquarium owners find that they are very active and react to movements outside of the aquarium, including attempts to attack an "invader" through the glass of the tank. It is generally advised not to mix them with other fish, as they can be very aggressive, with few exceptions. They require tanks of at least 100 gallons, and temperatures of about 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit. They love all foods, and need frequent water changes because they are such big eaters.
very nice, you don't see those in the hobby too often any more (with good reason, as you know).
over the years, I've had more than a few show up at the stores I've worked in, usually in buckets with a "please take this beast" plea to go with it... but I almost never see them on avail. lists.
gonna try to breed them ?
