Two piece rod turned into a one piece?!

Thread Starter
So as I tried to pull apart my two piece rod after a night of fishing, I realized that the two pieces were stuck together. There was no way I could pull the top half out of the second half.

The rod's top half inserts into the 2nd half, which is hollow at the top.

I've tried WD-40 but it seems that they're so tightly fit that the WD-40 wont seep into it.

Ive tried lighting a match under it hoping that it would expand.

I can't get them apart.

Any suggestions?

Get a good grip on the two pieces and twist and pull apart at the same time.

Cool it with some ice where they go together and then give it a try.
Better that a 2 piece rod became a 1 piece than the other way around.smile.gif

Very common problem with fly rods. Do a search in the FlyRod fourm many posts on fixes, lots work should be no problem getting it apart.

place rod behind your knees. putting one hand on each side, lower your knees and pull your knees apart at the same time you twist rod with both hands in opposite direction. I know this sounds like a porno-deviate pose, but the torque built up by this method may be enough to loosen the rod.

When the twist and pull after cooling with frozen peas doesn't work. I wrap both halves with hockey / fricktion tape. And then twist and pull. I was surprised how much more torque you can generae when your not spending all your power on just trying to grip it.

I tried everything in the past from upsidedown air dusters, to hair driers and frozen produce. The tape methoudd has worked on multipiece fly rods up to surf rods.

After reading this post I decided to tackle the 11' rod standing in my entry way for a couple of weeks because I couldn't get it apart.

I was about to try the tape idea when my wife stopped me and showed me a rubberband trick. Basically you take a couple of rubber bands and just wrap them around the pole where you want to grip. They give you a lot more torque. Worked really well.

easier to do with two people. One person holds the lower section at the grip. Second person uses those round rubber grippers that you use to open jars, or the rubberized bottom of a bathroom rug to grip the top half of the rod. Both people twist and pull in opposite directions. Always has worked for me.

A couple of pieces of inner tube work, such as that used to straighten leaders. Once they're apart, use rod wax to lubricate the ferrules to make it easier the next time. In a pinch, an ordinary white candle rubbed on the male ferrule will work.
Good luck!

I was kidding around when I told you this yesterday but wouldn't you know this would happen.

Get a strong friend to tug on your rod.

If it still isn't apart....go to the rod building forum and try a search or ask it again there. Happened to be way back when I got the info there to get them apart.

And I agree, better than a one piece into two piece.
