Conowingo Catwalk

On Saturday I neede to get out of the house for a bit and it was just my son(2) and I. I live about 15 minutes from conowingo dam and figured it would be something cool for him to see. I knew they were letting a lot of water out so I knew my son would think it was pretty cool. Anyway on my way down to the dam, I was on the road that deadends into the parking lot and noticed someone put up a few signs (decently made) Saying " Exelon open up our catwalk", "Exelon Sucks", "Give us our Catwalk back" and a few more. I have never fished the calkwalk when it was open, I remeber seeing it as a kid but never went up there. The closed it after 9/11, I guess they think that someone could try and blow up the dam from there, pretty silly when you can drive right on top of the thing or drive a boat right up to the base if you really wanted too....I know its closed for security reasons but I wonder if there was anything that could be done, for instance a petition, or helping develope a way of safely allowing people to use the catwalk again? So sort of paid yearly pass with security check or something like that. I know that they would not spend big dollars just to allow us up there but if it could be paid for by buying a pass or permit it really wouldn't come out of their pocket.

I think its more of a liability issue then a terrorist threat.

Here in Pa Safe Harbor has their cat walk open as does York Haven. Holtwood is closed for construction reasons. I believe Exelon owns Muddy Run and they even closed part of that last year to fishing for liability reasons. So I'd be willing to bet its more of a liability issue then anything else.

DIdn't they build a big fishing area down there below the dam?

They did build a so called fishing area which is down stream from the face of the damn where all the fish are, mostly for handicapped people to get ot he waters edge but for real fisherman it is worthless.

No Derrick, they closed the catwalk immediately after 9/11. I wan't to start a petition to open it back up. Be on the lookout for it. Anyone wants to help, PM me.

The pier area, mentioned as a "handicap playground" is great for Cats and perch. I catch big fat cats on it all day long. Too many people below the dam fighting for a few rocks....not my idea of "fun.

Hope this helps.

I crossed over it today. I know why they closed it in the first place. I was just stating why its closed now. And they did close part of Muddy Run 2 years ago to fishing becuase of liability issues.

Now with that said, they had a lot of construction equipment with guys working on top of it today. Could be another reason. Outside contractor don't want anybody up for liability issues.

The amount of trash that has collected up there scares me. I'd say the first 10 yards out from the dam was all trash. Even more then that in the corners. The amount of water coming thru the center gain today was awesome. The height of the waves it was creating was incredible.

You fish down there alot? I always wanted to fish it as its only about an hour drive for me to get there. I just don't know what to do after I get there redface.gif

I fish the far right on the "pier" for cats. I use nothing but squid for the medium sized cats. For perch, I use artificials. For rocks, you have to fish right up close to the dam.

Too late for shad now, but the perch are running strong.

For big flathead cats, I like a whole bluegill for bait. Since the actual, bellow the dam waters are considered fresh, you should be able to use a small WP. Clam snouts work well too.

This is an absolutely awesome carp spot. There are thousands of carp here. I always set one carp rod, one cat rod, and one perch rod.

Oh, Chesapeake tide water licence is OK bellow the dam - even though it is actually fresh water.

Yes you are all correct. The "catwalk" was closed after 9/11 for obvious reasons. Then it was discussed when it may be opened up again. The answer was it will be closed indefinitely to the puplic for many reasons. Most importantly the possibility of a terror attack. One reason is that the puplic on the catwalk prior to closing was a major pain in the ass. Not all but many were disrespectful. Performing acts that should be done in bedroom and bathrooms and many more. The puplic impeded work that needed to be done on the dam by getting in the way all the time. They actually snuck inside the plant at times. Never cleaned up their messes. I can go on for hours about this subject. I can tell you the a petition will never work. It is private property, remeber that.

Thank you for commenting, specifically about the petition. That is a real shame that people did not clean up after themselves, especially after making such a horrible mess of the place. Kind of takes some of the wind out of my sails. Just curious, do work for Exelon? Either way I am interested in your opinion of how to get the cat-walk reopened, even if it just on the weekends [or weekdays.]

I think, at this point, people would even be willing to pay a "pier fee." Would really like to have more dialog concerning this matter.

Scott.

Ever been to Safe Harbor? They actually have heated bathrooms, picnic tables and awnings over top of them, even got vending machines in the warm months. Plenty of trash receptacles to. It can get pretty full there but everyone keeps it clean for the most part. Then again there is a security booth at the entrance and they can pretty much see the whole catwalk and keep a watch on things. Fish Commission also stops in daily. Owned by a completely different group though.

Makes you wonder. Maybe a phone call and ask them exactly what the problem is. Maybe get a sportsman group involved to help with the effort.

Any help would be appreciated,

In the previous post i referred to the catwalk and actually meant the handicap ramp. Any where to call to see if that is open before i make a trip?

The section you are talking about is referred to as 'the warf" I do believe on the recording right now they are saying that the boat ramp and warf are closed.

Thanks for the help; my issue was that I was calling the wrong number. I was dialing 1-877-457-2525 which is the spill info and I should have been calling 1-888-457-4076 and listening for the catwalk, wharf and boat launch.

I know more now.

Thnaks again!

Yeah and at this rate the place is completely unfishable and god knows when they are going to shut some of those gates down....could be a while

opening the catwalk is one thing getting the park to reopen 24hrs? thats what i'm talking about i don't see why not same permit system and a guard at the gate should solve most of your problems and the money from the permits should pay for anything else. what do you say about that?
