Best clip on line counter??

I want to buy a line counter that mounts on my rod... not for fishing, but to keep track of the amount of line I'm spooling onto reels. I see that Rapala and Berkley both make one for around $15... anyone use either? Are there others? Sources? Any info always appreciated. Thanks.500

A quick search of posts came up with four threads mentioning Shakespeare's version but it had line-slip issues with braid even though tension was adjustable. I'd previously looked at professonal spoolers and was shocked at the price -- for that much money the amount on my reel can stay a secret.

I hope you get some answers we all can use.

I looked at spoolers too and had the same reaction. I've found 3 counters so far and the Shakespeare makes 4.... It's not so much how much my reels hold as it is trying to see how much is left on the 1200-1500yd spools that I buy. Thanks for the info... I'll hope for other replies too.

I recently tried the Rapala line counter you have pictured. I was not aware when I purchased it that it will not work with spinning reels, because of the way the line lays coming off the spool, or at least I couldn't get it to work accurately. I think it is designed for conventional reels only. I also only wanted to use it for spooling line to reels.

I ended up going to the local high school football field and used the yard markers and goal posts to get an accurate reading of how much line I could get on the reel, and subtracted that from the spool to determine how much I had left.

Eventually, I'll probably look into buying a second-hand line spooler.

Hmmm... All I want is a way to keep track of line I'm loading. A unit that clamps on a rod or a table. It's not looking good. I occasionally see a shop selling out and see a spooler, but they generally are way more than it's worth for me to pay. Thanks for the input.
