EZ Pass & Towing

Thread Starter
I just got EZ Pass and was wondering if I would have any trouble while towing my boat. Does the reader know the boat is attached and charge accordingly?

I don't think it knows but perhaps it does...

They charge by axle. They know

In my experience, trailering from cape may to cape cod numerous times a season, You will get a ticket every time you go thru a low speed toll but not in an express or fast lane toll. I figured this out the hard way.

The problem was eliminated when my plate was accidentally bent up as not to be read by the cameras, cant for the life of me figure out how that happened.....

There is an axle counter in the lane, but sometimes it does not read the trailer axle. For this reason make sure that you list your trailer tag on your EzPass account. If the counter does not pick up the axle but the tag scanner picks up the tag and it is listed on your account, they will charge the toll to your account. If the tag is not listed on your account they will hand search it and then they will send the listed owner a bill in the mail and it will include an "administrative" fee.

enter through a manned booth and exit through any. they just need the first one to set the axle number

I haven't gone through a TON of tolls with my boats, but the few I have gone through, I just go through wherever i wanted, and ezpass charged accordingly. Both slow booths, fast booths, etc.

they know. i see the charges for it.

I always get the extra axle charge whenever I trailer my boat up the NYS Thruway. Through any of the lanes (fast or slow), and it has not been a problem.

I agree I travel from southern ME down to the cape towing my boat a couple times a year, straight thru the Hampton NH toll, sometimes through the booth but usually on the high speed toll section. I also go thru the tobin bridge toll.

I have looked at my records...nothing unusual or different.

Varies by state:

New York:

How to Sign up for a Special Towing Tag

If you want to use a dedicated E-ZPass lane when towing a trailer, camper or boat you can now get a special tag. The tag is programmed for the tow vehicle and trailer combination. The tag must only be used with the vehicle towing combination. This eliminates the need to use a staffed lane which will reduce your travel time. You must first have established an E-ZPass account with the New York E-ZPass Customer Service Center. Just fill out the form below to request your special tag.

I had a tag for the truck-boat combo issued by NYS. Works great, no tickets, no worries.

Go on line for each state... I know Mass has counters in the ground, I was told by mass three years ago that NY did not have the counters and to go through a manual booth both on and off the highway.
