Anchor for a small jon boat

Attached is the picture of my boat (it is <10ft). I am looking for a small lightweight anchor that I can use in the shallow water and to be in compliance with the Bay Constables rules.



Do I need chain or would rope suffice?



Do you have any ideas of how to mount a cleat or similar (the boat as you can see does not have an "edge" to mount into)?

When I had my 10ft I used a 20lb block of concrete. It was poured into a small bucket of some sort and then the bucket was cut off. Theres a big eye hook in the top to tie a rope to. I used clothes line rope. Held the little boat pretty good. Are there any handles on the bow or stern? If there are, you can tie to those.

Did the same thing with a Big Plastic Mustard Jar. You can get one at your Local Deli. They usually have a few laying around. Just fill it up with sacreate & like stated above put a big eye in it & tie on a rope.

To make it easier to tie off, get a piece of polypropolyne rope (it floats) about 3 -4' and put a couple of eye splices in each end. Run line thru your bow handle and put one end thru one eye and cinch down. Now the other end will float along side for easy reach or you can keep one end in the boat.

I have a heavy jar filled with concrete but I wanted to avoid adding so much weight to the boat and it probably won't hold in some of the current areas I fish. The trolling motor, battery, and two people is enough weight. I saw an Aussie company that makes a plastic anchor that weighs nearly nothing. It would be PERFECT but they don't sell in the U.S. yet. I think I will just get a 2lb Danforth and try that.

just either tie knots with the anchor rope, or you can put incrimental eyes in the rope, and use a "shackle" to join eyes.

The purpose of a chain in the beginning particularly, is to keep a shallow angle between the anchor and the sea bottom, so that it sets properly. If you don't want to use the chain, you may need to set up a few times to try and get the anchor to hold. I'd just use the chain.

You can try something like this:


It's a folding river anchor. You shouldn't have to use chain with this, and it may not give you the same quality hold as a danforth, but will give you a lot more versatility, and smaller package when it folds.

This is what I use on my 10ft boat. I have 2 of them and they hold it just fine with one off of each end.
The plastic container doesn't rust, and is easy on the bottom of the boat when not in use.

For my small boats, I always used a mushroom. Heavy and cheap. Of course, that was in lakes; current situations challenge anchors that can roll.

i alway's use window weights.
you can find them laying around or out for trash every now and then.

Here's what I got for $25. 50ft rope with a splice at each end and a small 4lb danforth on one end. A short length with two splices that will attach to the bow handle.
