The Mad Deckhand
There is a plethora of new, much stronger knots, that kick the clinch knot's worthless, scrawny ass! Fish-N-Fool Line to Lure Monofilament..18.87 lbs Braid.............16.27 Fluorocarbon..14.99 Burke Knot Line to Lure Monofilament 19.32 Braid ............18.62 Fluorocarbon..16.49 Triple Loop Line to Lure Monofilament 18.49 Braid........... 16.07 Fluorocarbon 19.74 Miller Knot Line to Lure Monofilament 20.13 Braid ...........15.66 Fluorocarbon 14.94 My beef with the improved clinch dates back to 2002. I was fishing for shark on the Outter banks pier. A shark took my bluefish....big one! I could feel his slow head shake. When I set the hook....pop! There went my knot!!!! I never forgave that poor improved clinch knot! That @#$%!#&!!!
Shipwreck
Above is a uni with two loops through the hook eye. A properly tied clinch or improved clinch is a tried and true knot, but not really a good choice for sharkin. CapeCrusader
The Clinch and Improved Clinch are good knots. Why would someone use them for Shark fishing though?
biggstriper
I wouldn't blame the improved clinch knot for losing a big shark. I use a 20 ft. 250 lb. mono with circle hooks crimped to it. The Bucks stop here...

Fly By Nite
You want a good strong knot and easy to tie with mono...look up Pitzen knot. The clinch knot and improved are the most popular because thats what everyone learned how to fish with and nobody wants to change...i've not had a single failure with the Pitzen and been using it for a few years now. ecduzitgood
The improved clinch will fail eventually, I used it for years with mono and had no problems then 15mins. into fighting a monster Striper it failed, never again. I now use the uni-knot and palomar and recommend people stop using the improved clinch before it breaks your heart and fails.
The Mad Deckhand
Sometimes its the indian and not the arrow... In this case it's a knot that pulls out and by, by buffalo!
Slacker
Improved clinch is great for tieing a Hula Popper to 6# mono. Can't blame the BB gun for not dropping an elephant.

the soldier
My opinion is that any clinch-type knot is less effective then a overlapping type knot.

High Plains Drifter
You don't say if you were using braid or mono in your sharking story. The two types of line respond very differently to specific knots. I use a Triline knot (similar to a clinch knot) with 4-25 pound mono all the time and it's one of the best for that range of mono. I'd never use it with braid of any poundage. - HPD BTW - There are many possible reasons why your line broke on the shark!
