Penn Fierce vs. Penn Battle.

The Fierce is a little cheaper but how much quality are you losing? I am looking for a reel to toss unrigged SlugOs and other lures up to 3 oz. Is the Battle that much better? Fishing from a boat most of the time.

Technically, the Fierce is 2 levels down from the Battle, with the Sargus actually being the in-between model.
Compared with the Sargus, the Battle has 1 additional ball-bearing, HT-100 drag washers, heavier bail, superline spool, and also some extra "Bling".

Thanks Tuna. Didn't think about Sargus. I have three Shimano BTR and am looking for a reel dedicated for lures. I know you get what you pay for, but sometimes you are surprised by a lesser reel. The Battle is only a few pizzas more so i think i might try that out. Any other views are more than welcome! Oh and thanks for the link Kingfshr

I love my Battle 5000. Thing is a tank and is rock solid. All I use it for is lures and its worked great, plus the HT-100 drag is smooth as anything

Just got my Cabela's Salt Striker METAL today....10 BB's and cheaper to boot!

BTW, the Fierce has a plastic rotor.

Just got my Battle 5000 in the mail today. Decided on this reel after reading some positive reviews online. Seems pretty well built and looks pretty sharp too. Now just need to find some time to get out and put it through the paces.

The Battle sounds like the way to go from all the reviews I have read here and elsewhere. Penn is a proven brand and I will give it a shot. Thanks for the info.

These reels are not really Penn reels....the based on an old Pflueger reel. The Penn name is just put on them in China.

The Penn reels in question ARE Pflueger Infusion reels....they were originally, mostly put on combos (rod & reel) in department stores. Pflueger stopped making them years ago.

The company that owns Penn, Pflueger & Shakespeare simply took the old Pflueger reel and put Penn's name on it and there now selling a ton of them.

The Cabela's Salt Striker METAL reel I just got yesterday ($49 on sale) is also a Pflueger Infusion based reel.

+ the Fierce has a graphite rotor, the sargus en battle's rotor is metal/aluminum. Also the Fierce doesn't come with a spare spool.

(In the USA the Pflueger Infusion shares a lot with the Sargus, in Europe the Mitchell blade alu is based on the Sargus)
