smallsunx
what reel would be better for a 9' rod a penn 710z or a 704z
CharlieB
In my opinion, a 710Z. I use them on a 8.5 St Croix and 9.5 Loomis. "Game fish are too valuable to only be caught once."Lee Wulff
Fishalicious
I suppose it depends on the rod. If the rod is on the lighter side, like a Tsunami Airwave, the 710z at 17 ounces would match nicely. If it's a bit more heavy-duty like a Lamiglas surf n' jetty, then the 704z at 23 ounces might balance better. Unfortunately, it's not like you can walk into most shops and have both of these vintage reels available to try out, so you should try to find reels of comparable weight and see how they feel on the rod. YakDawg
I use a 710z on my Lami GSB 1081L and am very happy with the balance.
EBHarvey
Do you need the line capacity or other features of the 704? If not, why carry around the extra weight and bulk? If you do need something that the 704 offers and the 710 doesn't, then its the right reel and it'd be silly to use the 710 just because of the length of the rod, right? That doesn't really have any effect on what the right reel for the job is, ya know? I've done stuff I ain't proud of, and the stuff I am proud of is disgusting. Surfmaster250
I use a 704 that is modified on my 9' footers but a 710 would be fine as well. Like said above if you don't need the extra ummph go with the 710.. I made all my 700 series Penn reels bail less I have since gone to the Penn Torque 5 bail less which is right in between the 04 and 10. The old Penns will now be on back up mode!! Josh from PA
Budget and application determine most of your choices. I've got Penn and Daiwa saltwater reels in most sizes and recently bought the new Penn Conquer 7000, which on paper is an ideal combination of size, weight, strength, line capacity, and ruggedness. I'm going to use it a lot beginning this month, on rods of various lengths and strengths. Love America, or ... why live here?

redfin
If it's your typical light 9 and your casting lures, I'd go with a 710 size. If it's a stout 9 and you will be tossing eels and larger 2 and 3 oz plugs, the 704 would probably be a better choice.
EBHarvey
i have a 9' Lamiglas surf n' jetty That has almost nothing to do with it. I've done stuff I ain't proud of, and the stuff I am proud of is disgusting.
Fishalicious
That has almost nothing to do with it. I respectfully disagree. I also own an XS91MHS and my Spheros 5000FB (19.6 ounces) feels much better balanced on this than the Stradic 5000FI (14.1 ounces). The Stradic lives on my SS91MLS.
