fisher9910
So i planning to get a Penn Battle 6000, put 50lb braid on it (310 yards), and put it on a 7' Shimano teramar line class 15-30. I will be using this setup for stripers and blues in the northeast. I will be both fishing live bait and throwing lures from the boat. Is this too heavy of a setup? Thanks
jaymbone
I think a 5 series would be perfect and less weight but am curious to see what others say... You should have been here yesterday! fisher9910
so the reel is too big for the rod? Should i get the 5000 battle? I was trying to keep it around $100 for the reel and the battle looked nice. Is the rod good for the job? Thanks for the input. keep it coming. I recomended the 4500b because it makes livelining easier. I use a 7' St. Croix premier surf rod...yes a surf rod rated at 6-12lb with a Cabo40..loaded with 20lb PP. I use that for bucktailing fluke and jigging bass and blues and skipjack tuna and.....whatever else that swims till I get over 2oz lures, then comes out the conventional gear. Fishalicious
Go to a shop and look at the reels. Â In my opinion, the 6000 would be enormous for a 7 foot rod. I think you will agree. redfish12
I have the 15-30 teramar and it is under rated compared to what it will toss. I think you would be better suited with a MH or a M if you're planning on tossing lures. If you want to live-line big baits with it then you'd be fine. As far as balance goes, I have a Cabo 40PTS on mine and it balances very nicely. I think the 6000 would be far to big.
fisher9910
Alright lets throw a totally new question out there. What is a good rod/reel/lb braid for what i mentioned i was going to do with it? Trying to stay under $250 for the rod and reel. The battle and teramar was going to add up to about $225. redfish12
I think the MH Teramar and a Quantum Boca would be great. 7 or 7'6''. When you say boat do you mean headboat or a boat lower to the water and where you can enjoy fighting the fish? If you're looking for something to yank fish over the rail then I don't have much to add. I've mostly used penn stuff in the past, you could get a used 5500 ssg in the bst and a decent rod for under 100 that would last you a lifetime. I got a tsunami airwave this past year in the bst, 7' MH 1/2 - 2oz and I've been very pleased with fish up to 18 lbs on it so far. Works fine for plugging/jigging back bays and from the kayak.
