Here's the package sold by one of the bigger marine stores. They have a smaller anchor package for up to 16'. So this one is for 16-24'

Boats to 24', 9lb. Weight, 6' Anchor Chain Length, 1/4" Anchor Chain Dia., 150' Anchor Line Length, 3/8" Anchor Line Dia.

Which type of anchor you use depends on what type of bottom you’re trying to hold. Basic 8lb Danforth anchor will hold a 17’ boat. Rope length standards call for 5 to 7 times the depth. Which means if you’re in 20 foot of water you should have out a min of 100 foot of rope min (5x20’). An 8 foot chain will help the anchor grab in and stay low. This is why I don’t need much rope out. The chain keeps the angle of the rope low to the ground keeping the anchor dug in.
Actual rope needed is nowhere near that. I can anchor my 17’3†boat in 30 foot of water with about 60 or so foot of rope. But it will bust loose in waves and big winds depending on what’s on the bottom.

The lightest anchor that I know of for any size boat, that actually work, are the aluminum Fortress "Guardian" anchors - they are danforth style.

Their 4 lb model is rated for 17'-22' boats and replace 6-9 lb steel anchors of the same style.

I use their 6 lb model, with much success, on my 23' CC with 6' of 3/8" chain.

i'll second the opinion that the 4lb fortress is the best all purpose anchor for a 17' boat. you can google "fortress anchors" for more info. be sure to include "6 ft or more of chain. 3/8 nylon rope works well. one of the good things about fortress anchors is that you can take them apart for stowage. that allows them to take up less space on your boat. they are more expensive that the other danforth type of anchors but have much higher holding strength and do a much better job in mud and sandy bottoms.

buy the cheapest one possible. i have lost two in 6 years. I like to fish structure for stripers. The highlands bridge in jersey is a mother.

I now use regular grappling hooks to hook onto bridges or wreck anchors.

Double your chain length and you will be able to significantly shorten your scope.
