I have read that...oh I think it was about 1962, there was a shark attack in Long Island Sound and that's it , no details....where, how, species, fisherman on a boat got bit or a swimmer? I've been really curious about that. Does anyone no any of the details?

While on that subject has anyone or anyone you know had any shark encounters in Ct waters while surfcasting or swimming or whatever. I know it's rare but how rare?

I've had plenty myself, but that was when I was a teen surfing in Fl.

Seen and heard of enough caught locally to convince me that where there's food here they're around, no reason for them not to be. Never heard of an attack, but a friend of mine watched a full sized great white circle a couple seals sitting up on the rocks on the north end of kelsey breakwater in clinton through a spotter scope from his beach house a few years back, so if the seal season ever overlapped with the swimming season I could see it happening, although the seals are usually long gone before people start swimming.

I've done stuff I ain't proud of, and the stuff I am proud of is disgusting.

EBHarvey you reminded me. check out this link to sharks of Massachusetts and watch some of the vids http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dmf/marin...hite_shark.htm

I remeber watching an episode of Spanish Fly I They were in mass. pretty sure it was Marthas Vineyard fishing for striped bass in a salt marsh. they did'nt look comfortable getting in the water to wade, perhaps that's why.

View PostI've seen seals out on Gull Island last year during the swimming season.

But, I've never seen a shark in the sound, although I'd bet some come in.

Never seen or heard of Tuna coming in the sound either for that matter.

Every so often, football sized bluefin come pretty close in - I know of several fishermen (I think even Capt Jack Baliant-sp) mentioned catching small sbft in the typical bonito/albie locations.

View PostPersonally I think unless you live in FL or the outter banks then you have nothing to worry about. Although I may be slightly apprehensive about skishing at chatam with all the seals cwm31.gif

Not worried, just curious. Like I said as a kid in Fl i've had plenty of encounters. The closest I've been to a Shark that I was aware of, me and a friend were standing and talking in chest deep water when a fairly large fin past between us, we were no more than a few feet apart. Countless bumps while surfing. I even seen a surfer get pulled up on beach with one whole leg bit clean off.

this is funny, i just started a pretty large post on another site about sharks in the sound. i am doing a couple night time striper reef trips this year, but have been collecting a bunch of stuff for a large nasty chum slick. brown, sand tiger, maybe a blue, those seem to be the most common sharks people say you may hook into. you never know in the water.

if i stuck a bull that would be off the wall sick! someone had mentioned tracked sharks in late fall migration, i guess mako and whites were included and slide through the sound. once again you never know.

cant wait to at least try and maybe hear the clicker go wild on the reel with something big!

My wife and I saw a monster shark swirl and splash right off Matawan Creek (place where the Jaws story started) just a week ago today.

It was not a small animal. Actually very very big. We were in Yaks, it was her first time in the salt. Eye opening to say the least.

Saw one that was abt 9-10 feet near Shag 2 years ago, guessed it was probably a blue. There were 4 or 5 boats, we were crushing albies and I suspected he was just slurping them up as they were getting torpedoed back into the water stunned. There are often acres of bluefish in those parts so I can't imagine they aren't around in pretty good numbers in the Eastern end.
