you can use them to charge your ipod/phone and other accessories that charge off a USB port.

For DTV, they sell a box called AM21 that add off air tuners to your sat box. Typically they use USB ports in the back of the unit though. I am sure the front ones would work, but I see no reason why you would want to do that.

View PostSome DVRs have those USB ports to allow you to play media (videos, images, ...) that's stored on USB sticks on your TV. They do not allow you to transfer shows to a USB (without major hacking cwm31.gif).

Dish Network DVR's allow you to plug in a USB hard drive and use it as additional storage for shows. There's a couple of caveats though. It costs a $40 one time fee to activate the feature. And the shows are encrypted so they're only viewable on YOUR DVR's. Not readable via computer or shareable with other peoples DVR's. They will work on any compatible DVR on your account though, not just the originating one.

I believe DirecTV does something similar, but the drive ends up being used as replacement storage, not additional. So the built-in storage of the DVR is unusable.

I'll have mine on the rocks.
