Striped Bass for sale in Falmouth

Went by a local fish market and noticed that their sign had striped bass on it as currently for sale.

I am assuming that this is farm raised fish, correct? Isn't it illegal to sell fish caught in another state? Just checking. I may swing in and check it out. I highly doubt they would be selling/advertising illegal fish, it is a pretty reputable fish market in town.

Thanks

I don't think its illegal to sell stripers caught in a commercially legal fashion in another state in MA.

I was in a restaurant the other night and the special was fresh Maryland caught striped bass.

We buy Bass almost year round at the restaurant. Most is from Maryland and Virginia. Usually you need to ask for farm raised and it is available year round. It may be illegal to sell out of state bass (wild caught) during Ma. bass season? Doubt they are selling a product that could get them big fines unless it is advertised as farmed or Virginia and actually came in the back door.

They are in fact wild striped bass commercially caught in Maryland currently. Early this winter there was alot of bass out of Virginia on the market in the Northeast.

Whole Foods Market in Dedham has been selling wild striped basss for quite awhile now. They are whole, about 18-22", and have a white plastic loop tag in their lip. I was suprised to see that they were only about $6.99/lb. And, no, they were not farm-raised.

I highly doubt a place as big as Whole Foods would be selling them if it were against the law.

I find it amazing that fish markets in New England would sell fish all the way from Virginia. I would question the freshness of it, but I guess we just get spoiled with really fresh fish being that we are on the coast. Plus, I bet those fisherman immediately put those fish on ice, basically flash freezing them once they are caught. How else would Red Lobsters in Nebraska have such yummy fish.

Either way, it still just feels odd to me. Farm raised / Hybrid bass or fresh wild fish from hundreds of miles away. No thanks.

Last year about this time the Clam Man in Falmouth had fresh wild striper. I asked where they got it from and they said north carolina.
