braid for trolling

ok, i'm setting up some of my conventional reels for trolling. my question is since you might run through weeds and stuff, wouldn't braid be better than mono for trolling?

i've never used braid before but i've seen threads where they say it works better in areas you might encounter weeds.

thoughts?

What type of trolling are you planning on doing? I like braid for trolling for just about every fish that swims. You can feel everything with braid and it allows your lure to dive deeper than equivalent strength mono. I prefer it for trolling boards for walleye as well as bottom bouncing.

when troling with braid use a keel, braid to keel leader to other end of keel to lure, the keels keep the braid from spinning witch can be a pita st times, i do this tubing and wormin i use a 6-8' leader mono or fluro, and a bb swivel is a must, sampro makes a good bb swivel

Okay, here are a few of the reasons why you shouldn't troll with braid:

Braid isn't clear, which is critical for trolling lakes

Braid doesn't stretch, so short-strikes don't hook up

Braid is strong and doesn't stretch, so if you get hung-up on a log or rock, your rod can snap or kick back without warning

Loops/line twists from trolling braid easily turn into wind knots

Braid sinks faster, which can be good, but not if you're worried about getting hung-up or you can't keep a steady speed

I'm not saying that braid can't work, it's just not the best choice.

All valid points that can be over come by using a length of mono/fluoro as a leader and using the correct weight/action rod for braid. Somewhere in the setup there needs to be a shock absorber be it the rod, line or both. I like to use rods with a slower/softer tip with braid so I don't rip the lure out and miss stikes. This is why lure/line/rood/reel manufacturers are still in business, we all like to use different set-ups and too each his own.

You need a 30' leader to overcome most of those issues, similar to what guys that use monel or lead core or wire do. So, why waste the money on braid if you're really just using mono anyway?

Yep a long leader is needed depending on target species but I mainly use it so I don't have to respool every year or a couple times a year. Braid will last a couple years before it even needs to be flipped since only a short piece is snipped off when tying on a new leader.

I use fireline and suffix to troll with.I've not had the problems spoken of?Maybe because I've used braid for a long time and have learned what I can and can't do with it.I definatley like it for getting down to where I want it to be.The feel I get when I contact structure is awesome(I can tell if I'm hittin wood rock mud grass)As far as hook sets I use a longer rod when trolling with braid with a fast tip for a little give, this helps on hook set for sure.I dunno you gotta use what your comfortable with.I like braid!!
