Penn Slammer vs. Shimano Spheros FB 6000/8000

For basically the same price ($130 - $140) you can get a Slammer 560 or Spheros FB 6000 or 8000. Interested in advice from those who have tried either or both, particularly as to ease of maintaining. Thanks.

No idea on the Spheros, but the Slammer is built like a tank, you just can't break it. It is also the easiest reel you could ever take apart, IMO. Theres about 5 parts inside the body you have to worry about, it really doesn't get much easier.

I have the spheros 4000fb on 2 of my rods and it is and outstanding rell, never had any issues with it.

I have extensive experience now fishing both.

I initially liked the Spheros better. Its got a nicer, tighter build and finish and is a good looking reel.

After fishing them a lot I like the Slammer better, although the difference isn't night and day- its rather small. The Slammer is a little easier to self service and the tolerances aren't quite as tight- its more tolerant of some sand. The Spheros (and the Saragosa) for me have had sand issues at times.

You can't really go wrong with either, though. Very comparable. Good reels.

I beat up my slammer 560 pretty good. Like the others guys said quick and easy to service. Mine gets dunked all the time, rinse it off with the hose and lube as needed. I would take the bail trip out though.

I agree,if you think the reel will get wet on a regular basis, i would go with the slammer.

The one fly in the ointment with the Slammer is that the drag cap is not waterproof like the Shimano or even other Penns. If Penn built the knob with a 3 cent rubber gasket this could be cured, but its not.

In fairness, the drag washer is somewhat protected, it resides in the bottom of the spool and is shielded but not water tight from either top or bottom.

If the drag washer gets wet, its performance goes downhill, particularly because the drag consists of only one very large HT-100 washer.

I thin coat of Cal's drag grease helps improve the wet and dry performance of the Slammer drags in my experience.

I have my Spheros for yearssssssss and i only need to open and lube it down and that it..
Unless you are going to being a total break down on your reels, i wouldnt worry about how many parts they have
The spheros can take a drop in the water from time to time....i've done it and it still as smooth as the day i got them...
If you are set on getting a spheros FB model...then go with the 8000 it hold
more line and weight less then the 6000
yea i know it doesnt make sense but it does...the 8000 will make a great lure thrower...
now if you want to get a bargain....The spheros 6000 FA is on closeout on a
few sites..and they are going for $59they are brand new...
so what if they are the older model....they still work great
