Sudsy
Which removes the Penn from contention It's nearly 3 times that much $$ The Quantum is a good, almost great, reel I just wanta play everyday despite small nagging injuries -- and go home to a woman who appreciates how full of crap I truly am. ~ Crash Davis Social Distancing since 1962
raider73
Which removes the Penn from contention It's nearly 3 times that much $$ I think you're confusing it w/ the Torque spinning. The Conquer spinning is like $199-220 and if you go the ebay route, it is $150-175.

ematsuda
Conquer is solid on paper and I've handled it but never used it. It's new so reviews are going to be limited. If I can give you this, I think it's a very good reel for the price and some forum members here that have tested it prior to its release are impressed. I just purchased a Slammer so I can't jump on the bandwagon just yet. Here's a thought - why don't you get it and review it for us?
redfin
I held and examined the 5000 size. It seems like a decent reel. I feel the retail price is a little high for what your getting (or not getting - like better quality gears). That said, the biggest problem I have with the reel is the swing out hatch. Very good idea but poorly designed. There should have been a rubber gasket type seal between the housing and the swingout hatch. There is nothing there, barely an overlap. I would seriously worry about sand getting in there. Forget about water that's a given. Too bad - I had high hopes for this reel. If I was penn, I'd redesign the hatch/seal area or maybe just make the housing all one piece. For now the Shimano Spheors FB series with a manual pick up is the new "low end quality reel" IMO. Michael P
If you search the forums you'll find a few posts of mine where I discuss this reel. I also state that Penn asked me to field test the reel for them so I received it gratis, but my opinions are not spun because of it. I love the reel and have taken sizeable fish with it that pull one hell of a lot harder than stripers. I put the reel in the hands of a few of the guys here yesterday while out on a charter and not a one of them had a negative thing to say about it while catching schoolie bass and gator blues. I have not given it a dunk or dropped it in the sand so I do not know how it's going to handle those situations, but in the 6 months I've had it I have yet to 'officially' rinse it (only what it gets when it rains while on the roof of my car) and the drag, reel knob, line roller and anti-reverse are all like right out of the box. If you really can E-Bay this reel for $150 then I will be getting several more! Is it too much to ask to just breathe, be able to walk and go fishing? ulua53
I bought a conquer reel this summer and used it quit a bit for plugging from shore. First the good, the ht100 drag is very smooth under pressure. I caught some 15 lb blues and needed to fight them in against a fast outgoing tide at a breachway. The reel feels very solid for it's light weight(I think about 17 oz advertised wt.) The bad. Maybe it's my fault, but so far I have tried 30 and 50 lb power pro and cabela's ripcord si+ braid. I am getting wind knots when I use swimmer type plugs and the line isn't wound tightly back on the spool. Penn says it's braid friendly, but I think it only applies to the idea that the braid will not slip on the spool because of the rubber type of strip in the spool where you tie the braid on. I think the problem is that the line lay pattern on the retrieve is not enough of a crisscross pattern. I bought this reel to be my jigging reel for the cape cod canal, but never had the chance and wanted to see if it could be a backup plugging reel to my daiwa saltiga surf. I will hopefully get to use it next spring at the canal. In the mean time, I am going to try fireline on it, I've read fireline is good as far as windknots are concerned. ErikT
I have 80# Whiplash on my 7000 and haven't had one windknot or any issues casting. And I have been casting eels which leaves line a little limp(er) than if I was throwing a plug... The only propblem related to line would be after I catch a fish, my next cast goes as far as when I hooked up. This is due to the line digging into itself from the pressure of the fish and is not related to the reel. It lays line nicely too... So far soo good with mine
