Got a ticket today (no insurance card) can i beat it?

I was pulled over for speeding 57mph in a 40mph zone just now. The cop was cool, he didnt write me a speeding ticket because i have no points on my license. I just renewed my geico policy a few days ago and i didnt have the new insurance card with me. So he writes me a ticket for violation 3-29 failure to exhibit documents- inrurance card which is $180 fine!! At this point in my life $180 is not something i can pay at the moment, is there anyway to beat this? say mail in a copy of the card and ticket and plead not guilty? i im screwed? I never ever got a ticket for this i always have my paperwork with me if i got pulled over.

i know in nyc you just show up on your court date with proof of insurance and you're good.

i got pulled over in hoboken for going 40 in a 25 and got the same ticket. cop told me to show up at police station with my insurance card and he would rip up the ticket it worked though.

the tickets not for no ins. you would of been impounded for that. its for failure to show the card. so they arent looking for proof of insurance, they are looking for some cheddah. the cop can change it to obstructing traffic or something but you still pay 150 plus court costs. talk to him before court and try to grease him with some donuts

I would go to Court with my insurance information to prove to the Judge that you were covered while driving the day of the ticket. Hope for mercy, like a dismissal.

you guys arent too sharp with the reading huh. or maybe its the understanding what we read thats slipping past us somehow... <snap snap> focus!! the cop checked his insurance status. if he didnt have it this would be a very different thread, jersey is simply cashing in on the 50% of drivers too discombobulated to find their papers and they are very serious about it. forget your license at home, cant find/produce ins card? 180 kthxbai. blink twice if you understand

Can't you get something from Geico saying your paperwork was in process?

on the flip side did Geico email you something you could have presented while your paperwork was in process?

otter hit it on the head, he told me he saw that i had valid insurance. It was failure to produce a document that shows i had insurance. So basically im screwed! or i can plead not guilty, go to court, show my insurance card and hope i get mercy like hookinfinger said

Dude, he already cut you a break by not banging you with a ticket that had a fine AND points! That's 17MPH over the posted speed limit, outside of any school or construction zone you may or may not have been in. You know you were speeding, and got caught. Fighting it at this point would be looking a gift horse in the mouth. And if you do, good luck getting a break should you run into the same cop again.

Don't forget, you'll still be forking out court costs, and any time off from work. Just my $.02. Good luck!

i could have printed it out off the internet, im doin that right now. I didnt know, i was waiting for the new card in the mail. My fault, i should have known to have some proof of insurance with me. I never get pulled over, was in a hurry to get to a dr appt for my kid for her flu shot

what bugs me is he said i got pulled over for doing 57 in a 40. The address on the ticket is 1318 hwy 34/deer path. That is a 50 mph zone!!!! i just passed it 2 times during lunch there is no 40 mph zone. I wish i would have noticed that before.

you will get no mercy. this is a major cash cow. the fine went from $46 to $180 overnight a few years ago when they realized potential profit. they also jacked everything else up in that range. cut your losses imo

Out of curiosity does the ticket indicate you were speeding BUT only charged for not having proper documentation? If there is no mention of the speeding part maybe you'll get some leniency with a guilty plea.

I believe that the fine for failure to produce an insurance card (or a license) is discretionary. The court can do what it wants. In my town, they accept showing the card in court and you walk for free. In the next town over, you walk on the $180 but pay a court fee of $35.

go to court, say you had it but were too nervous to find it at the time. Happens. He didn't write you a ticket for speeding so.... can't go retro on that.



If that doesn't work, cry.



In any event, sounds like you could end up with an involuntary contribution to the NJ police fund this year.
