fishing after a storm

on a hot summer day will a storm really put bass into a lockjaw mode like with a cold front?
with light showers fishing actually improves for me on hot summer days.

On certain bodies of water I think the thunder and lightning sends them for cover, not the rain. Just my opinion from many years of struggling after thunder storms.
Thr flip side of that is I have had some of my best days as the tail end of a hurricane is passing or has passed. I think it may have to due with the low pressure associated with hurricanes. Of course the severity of the storm is less here in NJ.

Personall, I feel that anytime the barometer is rapidly moving, the fishing is good, be it before or after a passing storm. Key word is passing, the barometer is activly in motion. Just my opinion, from experience..

If there is no lightning, I like fishing during a rainstorm. Mainly because I'm the only one out there.

Kind of off topic, Years ago when I still went for trout. I was fishing a stream loaded with stockies. A heavy rain shower blew in and as soon as those first heavy drops hit the surface those fish went crazy. Those stockies thought it was the feeder dropping pellets into the water.

That's been my experience as well. But generally the best when it is dropping.

If it's stormed hard I don't find the fishing good after.

However, one of my best nights came after a light rain. Started just before I hiked into a lake on a day that had been 95 degrees. Waited in the car 20 minutes and the light rain stopped. That light rain just before sunset must have cooled the shallows or something, because they went off. Big black hula poppers.

from what I am reading and not experience.

Thunder and lighting will send the fish in the deeper water.
drain off etc, will need some time to settle back normal.

One trip stands out in my mind.

Just before the thunder and lightning started I got 5 largemouth on 6 casts to one isolated clump of lillie pads.

Then we had to paddle like heck to get off the lake.

It was a real gullywasher with scary lightning. We were glad to be in the truck.

Afterwards, all of the spots that held fish didn't.

But we did score where the water was moving.

Anywhere there was water rushing into the pond and the outflow over the dams.



There are so many variables that it is hard to make a general statement.



I guess it would be safe to say that fishing after a storm will be different than before it came thru



I do like a moving barometer better than a steady one.

Better falling than rising, but one takes what one can get

always felt that the influx of rainwater and wind after a summer t storm/squall added some extra oxygen to otherwise warm water and got the fish active. been my experience that smaller presentations were more effective than normal size stuff.

I agree thunder and lighting will put those bass on hold.
I also agree fishing on a cloudy day with light rain will bring the strikes.
When its raining lightly I know I'll get a phone call to go fishing. Fishing in the rain has two stages. #1 you get wet. #2 your so wet your underwear is soaked. After that it can't get any worse.

Best fishing we ever had was during and after some of our biggest storms
down here...
and i love it when it pouring..nobody around but you and the fish...
i love that saying...." It's raining and you are still going fishing??
yea...fish are already wet and they don't mind..

I've never had a problem with rain. What I don't like is stagnant weather- stretches of hot days and warm nights with no rain.
