actual breaking strength of braid lines

Anyone found out the actual breaking strength of various braids?
i heard how fireline 30 pound test will actually break at over 50 pound test.
cortland braid is "said" to be the strongest per pound test. how ocme braids are known for breaking at strengths a lot more than mono(ex 20 mono will probably break at right about 25 pounds or so)

The tensile-strength chart tells the story. And that story, especially for "20-pound" braided lines, is striking in just how widely brands vary. Sufix Performance Braid comes closest to breaking as stated, at 23.4 pounds — barely over the IGFA's allotted 22.2-pound break for the 20-pound line class (which is really the 10-kilogram class that converts to 22.2 pounds). At the other end of the strength spectrum is Berkley's 20-pound Fireline, which popped at 54.5 pounds on average.

Among 50-pound lines, Cortland's Spectron made the top of the list, breaking at 83.7 pounds on average, while at the low end sits the one superbraid tested that actually broke within its line class: Stren, at 46.8 pounds.
It's also worth noting the variation of the breaking point among the five tests. I calculated the standard deviation, then categorized the results as high, moderate or low based on a "visual curve" on looking over the range of deviation. Of course less deviation is more desirable since it indicates line that breaks more consistently. For example, Ande's 20-pound braid had relatively high variance, breaking as low as 24.4 pounds and as high as 39.3 pounds. Most 20-pound lines broke with minimal variation and none more so than Cabela's Ripcord Si, which varied just 1.5 pounds over five tests.
Lines in the 50-pound group proved a bit more consistent overall. No line showed a high rate of variance, though Spiderwire Stealth was close, varying from 61.8 to 74.4 pounds in our tests. On the other hand, some brands broke within just 2 or 3 pounds over the five tests.

I guess we know what line would be great with knotless hooks...

At least when it breaks off at the knot, you get most of your line back.

Well obviously they assume 100% knot strength to remove a variable.. knot strength depends on so many things, it makes no sense to test them tied.

The worse the standard deviation of the knots in a given line, the worse the line is.

I would only use that chart and others like it to compare one line to another.

Those numbers come from machine tests that have very little to do with what us fisherman may think of as # test.

If you try to lift 30#'s with a piece of 30# braid it will break every time, whether it's a fish or a weight.

It's good stuff but if it sounds to good to be true it probably is.

Plugteaser I have to beg to differ here.

I have seen 30# weights lifted with 30# braid in person, with knots in the line (we dont have the funds for knotless testing equipment).

Someone whom is also well trusted High Plains drifter (who is also an author of many articles for fishing magazines) posted this a few years back. http://stripersonline.com/surftalk/s...d.php?t=536502

My buddies who accomplished it, were using this same knot glued recently. They wrapped the line around a broken rod handle with eva grips and lifted. They also were yanking and dropping it to "shock" the knot which resulted in no breakage. (jerry brown solid white)

JC That thread looks like it has some good stuff I'll read it carefully after work.

Here is a thread from a while back in the Ma. forum. I tested a couple lines and it shows the results that I got. Some other guys weighed in with some tests they did and opinions.

Strictly amateur tests for sure but still interesting.

It's good to challenge conventional wisdom.........Stir the pot a little.

I have also lost a couple ounce lure because of a wind knot.
I think they all have great static strength, but shock strength is another story.

knot strenght should be tested with braid b/c the actual strenght of the line becomes pointless if it cant hold a knot. thin braid tends to cut into itself, snapping the line. so havine 30 lb braid becomes worthless if it's just going to snap at 8lbs. one fo the reasons i think many use crazy pound test braid. yes,rocks and stuff, but basically, it's just stronger in all aspects.

i did a test on 30lb suffix and daltiga surf braid and it always broke at half the rating right at the knot, and i used different types of knots too. 14lb fire line did the same thing, but 20lb did not. looking at both sides of the line, one could tell the lines just cut into themselves. i'll see if i can pull up my findings which posted on a some board...cant remeber which one right now.
