best solvent to dissolve grease and remove paint

Recommended Posts

i recently received a couple of older penn reels.. one is in excellent shape.. the other minor rash. but i'd like to strip it of all the old grease and remove the paint and other corrosion.. what is the best solvent or do you use a variety based on what is being removed?

i also plan on drilling the bottom of the rotor to help with drainage . then finally clearcoating the reel when its stripped clean of all paint..

ps.. anyone have a metal side plate that i can grab.. i want to strip that too... the reel will look odd with all bare metal and a black plastic sideplate..

thanks in advance..

My self when I take down a penn spinfisher I put all the parts in a glass bowl (That's All the parts except the handle and pionion-bearing) Then I add around 2 to 3 oz of paint thiner in it and clean the parts with a small brush, doing the houseing and rotor-cup first and then putting them on a old dish towle on the side. Then I clean all the other parts one at a time in the bowl while takeing them out and laying them on the towle leaving the parts with the most greese till last (like the main gear, cross-wind and pinion) After all the oil and greese is off I wash ALL the parts in hot water and soap.

AS far as takeing the paint off, I use ZIP-STRIP/paint and finish remover with a stainless scrubbing pad, steel wool works but you get metal splinters. What reels are you doing this to? houseing cover?headscratch.gif

View Posti am doing a penn 704z.. and i realized the pinion bearing is stuck on the shaft.. how do i free it up from the housing without damaging the bearing and the housing? the reel works fine.. but i'd like to repack the bearing.

Geuss you already took off the bearing retainer, so put the rotor-cup back on and tap the back of the cup with something that wont hurt it like a screw driver handle from side to side and your bearing will pop out with the pionion. I myself have old rotor-cups I use to do that. but I work on these reels all the time.biggrin.gif

i just found that by removing complete rotor assy/ bearing retainer and all. next i match the shaft nut [which is thinner] with a standard size nut and completely cover threads, lock nut in vice and w/brass drift pin lightly tap around bearing housing on reel body w/oil and shaft w/bearing will pop out w/no threat to rotor cup assy. just shown by a master machinest after looking at it for two minutes. me i've been spraying and pulling for months w/no sucess . i'm sure the aforementions works fine, just giving another successful means
