A great reel for fluke northshore fluke fishing from 15 to 50 feet . Pair it up with a 6"6 st. Croix and it handles any fluke

The CV2 8000 Captiva is a decent reel for the price just be sure to buy 2 or 3 for replacement parts. The parts that are most likely to give out Penn has decided to discontinue. I wonder why ??

Also, only the 5.3 models can be retrofitted. Those of us with the early (first run) 5.1's have to stay with static mag or no mag... and honestly I'm ok with that. I love my 5.1's

I should have said only the OLDER model 5.1 cannot be retrofitted. The newer models can be converted to the new MC cage.

Retrofitting your SX to be an "MC" model is not the same as doing your own mag conversion. The retrofit is to put the MC cage on the non-MC model. Which you can do to all avets EXCEPT the older 5.1 as clarified above.
Of course you can do your own mag, but the question was what's the difference between the MC and regular models... and when you consider the option of retrofitting... the difference is negligible.

I just wanted to let folks with the older model know that "static mag or no mag" were not the only choices. It is about a 20 minute job to put a very nicely fabricated, all stainless, and very effective adjustable "knobby" mag on the old version. I understand what the original question is, but your statement about the options for owners of the early version was incomplete and I simply wished to make folks aware that adjustable magging was a simple and effective option. I have not used the new MC Avets, nor have I checked the schematics to see exactly how they work, but most adjustable mag devices work by moving magnets nearer or further away from the spool. One thing about the MC frame is that the design of the dial would make it a reel that would be set at a particular level and cast without any option of backing off in mid cast. I don't see myself doing that much, but nice to have the knob extended where it is easily gripped and moved, In that respect, I like the knobby design.

Point duly noted,
I'm going to have to be FAR more detailed and inclusive with my post's these days LMAO
On the note of modifying these amazing little reels;
Has anyone found a good alternative to the grossly over sized/over weight handle?
I had a blue 5.1 with the old style counter balance/paddle type handle and it was the best (IMO) style offered... The newer handles are an improvement but still disproportionate to the reel (again just my own opinion.).

Yes, indeed. If you find an inexpensive solution for a smaller handle, please let me know! It is a power vs speed issue and the reel has plenty of power so a smaller handle will make it more comfortable to reel faster as 5.3 to 1 is not super fast.
