Saltiga Blast -- Worth coughing up the $$?

All,

I've been doing a bunch of research on the best reel for my Lami XS10MS..... my criteria were pretty simple in that I was looking for a reel that could take a splash or two, can handle braid and isn't over $500.

It seems to me that the Daiwa Saltiga Blast fits my criteria and from numerous searches on here it seems it can take a splash or two and is meant to handle braid.

I've been monitoring BST for a used VS200 but I haven't seen anything sell below $550.

So the dilemma I'm left with is it really worth spending the $420 bucks on the Saltiga Blast over $1-- on a Penn or Quantum or even a shimano....

Any insight would be appreciated. I've searched the forum archives and so im aware of the merits of the saltiga but i've never heard anyone justify if its actually WORTH the premium.

I'd strongly consider the Sustain (6000 or 8000). They are in you price range and are excellent reels. I can't help you with the Blast, but I have a Saltiga and absolutely LOVE that reel. I would like to think that the Blast would be similar.

They don't make the Blast anymore. They make a JDM equivalent called the Catalina now, but I'm not sure if it's the same reel. I would try and save a little more cash and pick up a saltiga-z if I were you, they're worth the money if you fish hard.

I have 2 blasts, great reels and handles braid with no problems. Might look on SOL for a used reel.

really i've seen them for sale listed by web retailers????

i'll be selling a vs 200 tomorrow in the BST in the price range you mentioned.
i just wont post it tonight because i forgot to take pictures.

They are still made and are in the 2009 catalog and on the dealer price list.
I have 2 and love them, manual bail only and srtronger than my Sustains highly recommend. Bought the second one over another Stella

The Blast has been discontinued and nearly sold out in Japan, but understandably they will still appear in overseas catalogs this year to sell the existing stock at the importers'.

As I mentioned earlier, full sized Catalina is now out and in Australia 6500 is being shipped to retailers. Catalina shares +85% of the components with Saltiga Z and are made in Japan on the same lines that make the Saltiga. They are 100% waterproof, and have all Saltiga's features including the massive one way anti-reverse clutch made by NSK, hollow bail, one piece handle, mechanical emergency stop, and rotor cast brake. They just lack few nonessential bearings and the gears are a step below the Saltiga. At around 65% of the saltiga's price, I don't mind gears that will last only 80% of the life of those in the Saltiga.

In my humble opinion, with the introduction of full size Catalinas there are no reasons for anyone to buy a Saltiga Z anymore. Not even those who just want the absolute best because Saltigas are not the absolute best anymore.

The blast is still featured on the daiwa site- the link above was a daiwa AU site. (australia)

I have a blast that I picked up here on the buy and sell forum-really love the reel which handles braid nicely--keep looking on the b&s forum because they pop up every so often.

I own 2 Diawa Saltiga Blast reels. They are awesome. The manual bail/anti reverse is a great aid. Youwill never break off a plug because the bail closes on cast.
The reels handle braided lines very well.

100% waterproof?? Do you mean waterproof drag or sealed frame making it dunkable?

I can see online that they have a sealed gearbox so does this mean they are dunkable? If so say good bye to VS
