Can you guys tell me why you use a perfection loop on the end of your snelled hook leaders as opposed to a surgeons loop. Also isn't a surgeons

loop stonger then a dropper loop on the main line for hook leader attachment. Still trying to decide on comfortable Tog rig to tie as I am new

to this type of fishing. Thanks

I personally find that a perfection loop tightens much more cleanly with the 40-80 mono sticks most people prefer to use for tog rigs. The perfection loop is also plenty strong enough and with a little practice can be tied very quickly and with no tag end to trim.

As far as the Dropper vs Surgeons loop for your main line. The surgeons loop is not designed to have pressure applied from both running lines from the loop in opposite directions at the same time, as often happens when you are snagged in the bottom. The dropper also just stands off better from the main line.

On a side note, I do not recommend using either a dropper loop or surgeons loop for attaching a snelled hook/leader to the main line. I perfer to double the last few feet of my mainline, and then loop the snell in a few inches above the sinker and secure it with a half hitch. For a better explanation, see "a tale of two blackfish rigs"

I don't think the perfection loop is a strong knot at all. The fly rod people use it alot, that is where i first encountered this knot.

Can't say it doesn't work well in the manner it is used for blackfishing though. I think the half hitch secures it enough for you not to worry about it.

Read the tale of two tog rigs thread. Those two rigs, 99% of the people who reguarly catch blackfish are using one or the other or both. If you tie them properly then that is all you need. There is no need to over think blackfish rigs- either of those two work extremely well- end of story.

Perfection loop is a better looking knot (IMO) and the line exiting the knot (going to the hook) comes out straight. The surgeons loop (double overhand knot) is bulkier and the line exits the knot at an angle (which I personally don't like).

Have fished both. Both work. Prefer the perfection loop and use it whenever possible (I find it easier to tie the surgeon's when my fingers are numb, so sometimes that is what gets used).

I snell direct, dropper loop for the sinker. Buy like 40 owner hooks 2/0 which i keep in the bag and use em as needed. I am not the most organized individual if i kept a mess of snelled hooks in my bag they would be all over the place and everything would get tangled...of course when i need it the most i'd be untangling rigs instead of fishing...so pre made rigs are not for me. the less crap i have the better...

I have been snelling my hooks with the simple snell where the tag end gets snugged up just below the eye of the hook after 5 or 6 wraps. I just descovered there is a different way to snell a hook where the tag end ends up at the pointed end of the hook. Any thoughts on which way is stronger?

I am sure both will work, just curious which snell method most guys are using.

I use the simple snell alot...i've never had a problem wit it. I use the rod holders on the boat to apply pressure against the hook gap as i pull the leader in the opposite direction to cinch it down as tight as i can get it. It won't ever come undone. Now that i think about it i use a simple snell probably 98% of the time. Sometimes i'll just tie a Pitzen knot to the hook also. I tie that instead of a clinch or polamar.

One thing I don't like those rigs are the empty spaces between the knot and the line. The "hole" after the knot loosens the line a bit and the tab from the togs won't be sensitive.

I tie all my knots (forgot the name... maybe Blood) tighten right to the next line leaving no space in between.
