Carp Floating Bread Fly

Thread Starter
Hey, I'm looking to create a fly that'll look like a peice of bread floating on the surface. I want to use a small hook, but its a heavy-duty hook, so the material I use needs to be highly floatant. The reason I am using the heavy-duty hook is because the area I catch carp on the surface has alot of pads, and the lighter hooks end up bending when the fish is ripping you throughout the pads.

So I'd like some suggestions on how to create a "floating bread" fly. I was thinking of using a peice of cork so I can assure the fly will float. And then taking some "fuzz" from a paint roller and tying it or glueing it to the cork to give the fly more of a "bread" look. Think this is a good idea?

Any other ideas on how to create a "floating bread fly"?

Try spinning some white deer body hair and trimming it to a square shape. You can singe it with a lighter to give it the look of crust.Works well on stocked trout also.

First thing that comes to mind: The foam carapace of the Gartside's Gurgler with the yarn body of the Tarpon Toad Fly. Yarn can be trimmed to any shape, foam will keep it afloat. Fly will ride "flat" on the water's surface... fast and easy ties.

Simple white marabou streamer with lots of marabou does the trick for me. It also mimics that old favorite carp meal, duck and goose poop. You'll need to carry a bunch of them, as they work for the first two or three casts until the marabou absorbs water, then you need to tie a fresh one on. I use them when I'm targeting surface feeders, sight casting.
