Worm Spawn

Witnessed the worm spawn this weekend while fishing for hold over Bass. Every year seems to be about the right time. Green ones rummaging around milking in a foot of water. Pretty cool to see. I saw quite a few. I flipped over boulders in the sand at the change of tide and picked up the large red colored sand worms for flounder fishing this morning.

I am not sure if the green sand worms are male or female. Too mushy for a hook, at least for me. I looked under the boulders for choice red ones. biggrin.gif

I always thought the worms were spawning over there in the shallows. I have caught bass there in March in 2-3' of water when it was below freezing. The only reason I could think of was worms, but of course it was too dark to see the fish.

The warm weather certainly got the creatures stirring. wink.gif I even saw a bald eagle fly over this morning!

Supposedly the most activity for worm spawn is at night. According to online articles.

Slappy, did you do sneaky this weekend? I was shore bound. Bass fishing was tough for me, Flounder fishing showed some life this morning.

I need to get the yak ready.

i was under the impression that a specific water temperature was need in order for a worm spawn to occur. Maybe I am wrong. I believe it is in the 50' somewhere. Need to find where i read that.

That's good to hear Slappy. I felt things would happen soon. I have the kayak on the saw horses making some tweaks. Ready to go this week. Unlike you, I freeze my toes off no matter what I wear but the thought of an early season jumbo flounder, keeps me getting ready.

Time to grab the fly rod as well. I do really good this time of the year with the fly over anything else during day time wading for bass. Just need the wind to lay down to fish my sand bar, I mean submerged steel girder. Urban Anglers! biggrin.gif

View Post50 degrees is a different type of hatch( Cinder worms ) seaworms happen in march /april

ah-ha. Makes sense. Can't figure out where I read that either. Thanks. Not to mention, just because I read it does not make it right.

View PostWe are two or three days from the full moon. Water temp yesterday was near 40. Whatever that article says for ideal temp, a gazillion worms, spewing milk like porn stars can't be wrong. biggrin.gif

True enough, love fishing worm spawns although they can be tough to predict sometimes and then getting them to bite during them is a whole other story.

If my notes are correct.. an island in quincy last year; underneath the lights around this time of year at night there was a worm spawn.. a week later the herring showed up in schools.. a week later the cod showed up in the harbor in numbers within casting distance..biggrin.gif
