colad
Hey all, Got into toggin last year and it is addictive...man I love it... I have a question about spring toggin if anyone can answer... In the fall I was catching in about 15-30 ft of water near structure or dropoffs (this is in narragansett bay). Come spring am I looking for these same spots to produce or should I be looking for a different area? I plan on being out there April 15th when the season starts (dropping the boat in April 4th). Any advice on what to look for is appreciated...I know I am not going to get any spots (and am not asking for any) just looking to minimize my time at likely unproductive places as right now I would try and hit the places from last fall on April 15th. thanks! Striper Sniper
They start coming inshore to spawn once the water gets into the low 50's. Whenever that time happens to be, is when you should start looking for tog on the inshore rocks. Don't be afraid to try soft bait like conch, hermits, or sandworms early too. Wayne Tj
Early spring tog like to forage around jetties and breakwalls. The stones warm quicker in the sun which activates the bait. Tog will be there when it happens. You have to put your rig in or right next to the rocks - 10 feet away or more and you might as well go home. America, the country so great that even its haters refuse to leave.

For the past 2 years I have been fishing on jetty for togs. If I toss my bait more then 5 feet from the rocks, I will rarely get a bite.

daves745t
Question on Spring Toggin around Jettys - do sizable blackfish come in close to spawn? I'm not a togger, but really had fun when I went for the first time in November on a PB and was amazed at how close to shore we were - some real slobs came over the rail. Do larger fish come in that tight to the rocks come spring? Feel free to PM Just b/c you CAN, doesn't mean you SHOULD....(what you do DOES make a difference - be accountable)BigWave Dave

Ralph78
Your best shot at a big fish from shore is april and may and the best shot of numbers is in the fall/winter. Reverse that for boat fishing. Rod Building is an addiction, the N.E.R.B.S. help feed that addiction.

Mike
If I may make a suggestion. Give the big ones a chance to make more blackfish!!! Limits are nothing, like 4, then 1. So I suggest that you have fun but choose your keepers wisely. It feels good to release a big blackfish full of eggs. Perhaps it's better to eat the smaller ones.
