Alan Hawk
Was looking at the thread with the massive White Shark posted earlier, and this question popped in my mind: What is the biggest recorded catch on reel and rod? I know about the IGFA record White Shark, but I am sure bigger fish were caught that were not allowed a record for various technical reasons. Any idea which was the biggest ever? skip0ls
i'm sure hundreds of people have hooked up basking sharks that could swallow the record great white, but i've never heard of one being landed
SCsurfcaster
Basking sharks are filter feeders so Im not sure if you could legimately hook a basking shark in the mouth.
fishinthedark
Mundus's 3,427-lb. white shark. Donnie Braddick was the angler.I thought wikipedia says: The largest caught on rod and reel was 2664 lbs caught near Ceduna, South Australia, on april 21, 1959 by Alfred Dean Which one are you refering to I Fish therefore I Lie
albacized
I've heard of other larger great whites taken, but disqualified for various reasons - the infamous Frank Mundus was one of them. They caught a huge white (I forget the exact weight) that was disqualified because they found the shark (as well as a couple of others) feeding on a dead whale and the IGFA considered that illegal chumming (using a marine mammal as chum)

Montauk Monsta
and he threw the hook in its mouth, it was more like a moby dick "catching" but he did land it so that what count in my book, and not theres haha RIP Frank Mundus
cobia_slayer
Disqualified because the fish was feeding?! That's stupid. That's like saying your striper is disqualified for feeding on the left overs from blue fish. I understand that it was a whale, but its a hunter scavenger and if its eating how does that disqualify you? LTSL
Shaky
the largest pacific blue marlin isn't in the record books because six tourists handled the rod. Choy's monster shattered the current record at the time but, was disallowed. had a large yellowfin tuna stuck in it's gullet if i recall correctly and the fight was over relatively quickly If you are ugly you are ugly. ndaniels
albacized, they also harpooned the shark which is disquailified the shark was something like 3,707lbs area
fishinthedark
ndaiels if you are talking about mundus's shark there is a reference on one of his pages to a 4,500 lb shark that he harponed it is not the one I spoke of. The one he caught on rod and reel was feeding on a floating whale carcas and they threw him a bait from what i have read. bill22
fishing is for the sport and the passion of fishing. i can go out and have a great day and not catch a thing. for me to find any fish that are feeding and just toss a bait would not be my way of fishing.(not saying i wouldnt like it now and then) but it would take out the surprise of what may happen

But I'd surely fish a blitz given the opportunity. "Who is John Galt?" Who? You?
MakoMike
The Frank Mundus/ Donnie Braddock fish was disqualified because the line test was well above the 130lb maximum allowed by the IGFA. ====Mako Mike====Makomania SportfishingPt. Alan Hawk
The Frank Mundus/ Donnie Braddock fish was disqualified because the line test was well above the 130lb maximum allowed by the IGFA. I'd agree with this. The feeding part alone should not have disqualified the fish. Now the big question: How on God's earth do you pull a 1.5 tons fish?
