Pencil Dimensions

Thread Starter

I'm not having much luck with my search so I was hoping someone could help me out with the most common dimensions for their pencil plugs.

What are the most common diameters for the face and tail of the plugs?

What is your favorite overall length and weight?

Thanks in advance for your help.

its all personal preference really, generally 7" and 3-3.5 oz is what I shoot for.

It will depend on a lot of things: where you fish, conditions that you fish in, type of rod, how you work a pencil, just to mention a few. Best idea is to just go ahead and make a few with various dimensions and go from there.

Thanks Gents

I am concerned a bit about making them too thick and not getting the action I need. I guess I will just turn a few different sizes and see how they work.

how thick are you thinking about making them? I fish the canal up here with my pencils, and canal pencils are generally pretty big and heavy. I'm limited to 1.25" max diameter on mine because of the blank size that I use, but anywhere between 1.25 and 1.5 max diameter, at approx 7" long is the norm as far as I have seen.

Like Jigman also said, figure out what size you are looking to attain, and then go from there. Its all about testing to find out what action you want, which is the main reason why we are building our own plugs instead of buying them off the shelves.

The basic pemcils I make are generally Gibbs copies, 7-1/2" long, 5/8" nose, 3/4" butt with a 5/16" x 3-1/2 hole up the arse to accept 3-1/2" of 1/4" diameter lead. Nose is drilled and spotfaced to accept a nose grommet, after using a 1" Forstener bit to cut the concave taper on the nose.
