so not being able to get the manual bail that is made for the 710z and after looking at the picture of it a few times.. i made my own. first i removed the bail then i drilled out the punched spot where it is held into the roller area then i pulled out the bail wire and re drilled the hole to the same diameter as the bail wire. then i used the bail wire and formed a very tight loop then cut it to where i could spread it apart a little. i put it in both holes and crimped it down in the vice.. it works better then my 704 manual bail kit on both my 704's.. here is a messed up camera phone picture so those brave enough to hack a stock bail and wire can try it at their own risk if they like..

I could be wrong, but I don't believe that there ever was a stock manual conversion for the 710. Not from Penn. Maybe aftermarket.

The ones I've seen have all been home brewed.

there is one on penn parts dot com but it is no longer available.. the picture is there if you want to look at it.. that's what gave me the idea after trying to addapt a 704 manual bail/roller on it. i got it to work but the line didn't lay right. the roller was a little bigger around so i think it was laying line to low on the spool. anyway the loop actually works pretty good for me.. it's smooth on my finger the line comes off pretty easy, it's easy to get back on and doesn't fall out with slack..

I think the kit for the 710 and the 650SS were the same with a couple of extra parts for one or the other. Not positive... but seem to remember that. I tried it on the 650SS and hated it. The stud that stuck out was a PIA and line pick-up was awkward. I too would like a clearer photo...

ok,, i have to find my rechargable batteries for my other camera. then i will take a better picture. i am going to do the same for one of my 704z reels.. i will take a few pictures of before the loop, the loop and after the loop.. but first i am going plugging for stripers.. the sun is getting ready to come up over here. i may be able to get to the beach before it peaks over the hill.

i couldn't find my battery charger cord so i used my cell phone again with a little more light.. you might be able to make it out a little better. i just did the 704z bail. you can see the end where i drilled it out to release the center punched spot that holds the bail wire in. the other thing about the 704 is that you need to remove the bail trip lever inside the rotor cup or have the lock down plate.. i removed it all on my pollished 704 green. i actually cut the entire boss off the side and melted some lead, heated up the rotor cup and poured a little more lead in to ballance it out. i used the trip lever lock down plate from that kit on this 704z. i fished the 710 for a couple houres this morning. the water was perfect but the fish must have been hiding from me.. i have it loaded with about 230 yards of 50 lb braid and about 15 yards of 15 lb mono backing.. it needs a 704 handle in the surf working a popper.. it feels like i have to reel to fast to keep up.. the 710z is pretty ballanced without the side bail nut in. i will try to find a cap or plug later. the smaller spool lip compaired to my 704 casts a 2 1/4 popper like a rocket on my 10 footer.. the loop is like a guide for your finger.. it's pretty easy to find, the line slides in and out fairly easy and it doesn't fall out that easy with slack.. i missed it a few times but like anything it just takes a little getting used to.. the line never caught on it casting..

Correct. Penn never made one.

"penn parts dot com" - official as it sounds - is just what Scott's B&T calls their parts dept. They even went so far as to give that kit you're refering to an official looking Penn factory part number but it's not a kit which was produced or offered by Penn Reels. Scott's B&T cobbled that kit together by combining a conversion kit Penn made for certain SS series reels with a few additional parts, none of which were ever designed or intended for the 710.

thanks for the info on that.. ss like slammer reels? i was wondering about that part on there because it kind of looks like someone made it out of different stock bail to look like those old half bail reels made back in the days. without swinging out it looked like it would get in the way more then anything.. i guess another option would be to look at ss parts for maybe seperate bail pieces so i don't have to hack up a stock bail and wire on my next one.. i wish i had a c&c machine. then i could make a bunch of cool stuff.
