How does one obtain a permit for Point View? I called the Water Commission number (provided by NJFGW) and left a message. No one returned my call. I live in Wayne and looking for a place close to take my boys fishing. Normally we wade the Ramapo when we don't feel like venturing very far.

I would keep trying, maybe email them.

Look in the 2012 freshwater books you get from tackle shops. There is a address you have to send an envelope with your address on it and a stamp and they send them to you.

Write to them ASAP, sometimes it's a few weeks before you get them. Helps to know someone too....
Fishing is weekends only. Go to the gate/guard house and check in. Need to show DL and fishing licence and pass, sign waivers, get tag to display.
If you're wading (no boats) you have to wear a pfd. Kinda sux but some days they're strict about it. Fishing is limited to a section of patrolled shoreline.
Some guys strap a tupperware with gear and a bunch of rods to a boogie board and tow it with a rope behind them as they wade the shore.

They are really spotty there too. Some days they are closed when they are supposed to be open. Last year I must have went 5 times when they were supposed to be open and they never did. There were a lot of pissed off people there that day.

I spoke to a woman at the PVWC yesterday and she made it sound like the commissioner may not allow fishing there this year.

She told me to call back after the 3rd Wednesday in April when the decision is to be made.

In the mean time, I'm going to mail in my request anyway.

I wish is it was as easy to get a permit as when I fished the Pequannock above Charlottesburg Reservoir.

Some follow-up questions:

1) How many permits are issued per fishing day?

2) Is there a limit on permits? I heard you can only get two at a time. I want to be able to take both my sons with me.

3) Where exactly is the guard house? Do you access it via the entrance to Toys R Us headquarters?

4) What species of fish here? Any trout native or stocked?

5) Anyone fly fish here? I'm mostly a fly guy except when teaching my kids the basics.

6) Depth of the water around the shore line? My older son is in waders, but not my younger son.

7) If in waders, how much are can be covered?

8) If not wading, is that a huge disadvantage?

Thanks for all the responses thus far!

I used to go there with my father and brother when i was younger, maybe 10 years ago. The fishing was a lot better then and you were allowed to fish all the way down to the damm. Now they only allow you to fish only a certain section and are strict about getting into the water. The water is pretty shallow all around the shoreline, and it was pretty hard to get to the fish. I havnt been there for about 2 years, ,maybe things have changed again.

as long as you had chest high waders and something to put your extra tackle on (ie; boogie board) you will be fine. The fishing there is excellent for the most part. I wish i knew someone who owned a house on the lake, i would so take advantage of it!!!

Where is the guard house located?

Is it possible to explore the area beforehand (like this weekend for example) or is it fenced off and patrolled?

Any recommendations for PFDs for kids (and adults)? Not the expensive inflatable ones, just something that will be comfortable and not restrictive.
