Pebble tape or shrink wrap

Thinking about taking off my cork and applying some Pebble Tape, maybe thinking about using shrink wrapping also, what are the pro's and cons of each?

Pebble tape, if it's the stuff made by 3M that I'm thinking of, according to some buds of mine who use it, they love it. Be aware that it is very coarse and that it will tear the crap out of your waders if you did the lower part of your grip with it. Most people I know sand it down a bit to take away some of the coarseness while leaving it rough enough that it has more grip than cork tape.

Shrink tube is surprsingly grippy, both the X-Flock stuff (which I might add is thinner in thickness once shrunken down) and the regular smooth shrink tube are very good and quite durable all things considered. Just make sure to get the right diameter shrink tube otherwise you'll be there all day (and night) with the heat-gun only to find out that you bought the wrong size AND probably melted the blank in the process . If you want a more 'cushioned' feel to the shrink tube, put a layer of cork under it and then shrink the tube over it, just be aware that it usually takes more heating to shrink over cork tape as opposed to a bare blank.

Btw, for a grip on a surf rod a cork-tape fore-grip, and a split lower grip of cork tape -> shrink tube -> cork tape looks sweeeeet .

SWJ, watch out- do not call it a 3m tape or he will PM you and laugh at your face because you don't know the slang. he said all the builders in new jersey will laugh in your face for calling it 3m.

his aka is surfcaster34, which he will use to PM you.

If that's the stuff that G.Loomis uses on the surf sticks... I had it removed and had the X Flock put on ... no cork under. I really like it and like a thin grip. The original stuff was wearing the crotch on my breathables and that is a real problem.

Never heard them referred to as "breathables", But I can understand how you wouldn't want to run 36 grit sandpaper against "the boys"

i wore shorts with the (3m) grey stairwell tape.. it rubbed my leg raw a little and also my fore arm but it does soften up after a few weeks of use, especially in the sun.. it is warm here most of the year so i usually only wear waders at night or early am. the xflock slips and slides all over the palce when wet especially between my legs and wet waders. even after i rubbed it with some sand paper to roughen it up even more. i must be loose.. i found cork tape to crack, peel and dry out after a season or two of heavy use. then looks and feels like crap.. i will use the (3m) you can laugh all you want butt i know exactly where it is, it holds up pretty well in the ellements and sticks very well.

I bought a roll of what I assumed to be that Pebble Tape stuff ( the 3M Kind... whatever) also intended to be placed on stairs etc... to stop slippage)

Well it turned out to be a Textured Vinyl product, it applied and adhered well... its comfy, not as rough as the true pebble tape but plenty of grip.

I think you guys are talking about 2 different products. The 'pebble' tape is NOT like sand paper or skateboard grip tape. It is bumpy vinyl or whatever, but not sandy. Don't see any reason to use the sand paper stuff on a rod handle. Unless you haven't learned to wipe the broofish slime on your waders just above your boots!!

That was my point... its a different type of product altogether Less Grippy, but Grippy enough... More Comfy, and no shredded skin

The sand paper stuff used by (for instance) G. Loomis is indeed just like the stuff on skateboards etc... I believe thats the 3M stuff mentioned earlier

If it's not the 3M safety tape you're describing, who makes this pebble tape...any pics of the stuff.

The actual name is 3m safety walk and it comes in a sand paper type finish as well as the rubber.

You can order it direct from 3M. It's around $100 for 4 rolls.

I've had shrink tape on one rod for over 25 years and love it. For me fish slime and cork tape hold beach sand which wears out my wader crouch. Another idea is to use tennis racket handle tape which has a cloth feel and helps hold together old cork tape handles
