ydnabronn
I'm heading to Big Sur in July. Was hoping to sneak in a little fishing. Is this area worth exploring? If so, any input on what to expect, type of gear & lures to bring would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance....
Mike Fixter
That area can provide some excellent fishing if you have the right gear. There are a few beaches but most of that area is VERY ROCKY coastline with thick kelp beds at that time of year. When I fish there I target the various types of bottom fish. (Cabezon, Ling cod, Goffer cod, Greenling, Blue & Black rockfish, Olive rockfish & the occasional Vermillion rockfish. I use HEAVY conventional gear & a minimum of 40# mono. Big pieces of squid on a 6/0 hook & 6 oz of weight is what I use. Light spinning gear can be used in some areas but plan to loose plenty of tackle. There is one area along that coastline where the 100 fathom curve comes within 150 yards of shore. Access can be easy in some spots & real tough in others. Spending a little time to find access to ideal water can be well worth the effort. Be very very careful along those cliffs, pay attention to what the tide is doing & watch the surf conditions at all times. Mike
Jim Perez
Good info from Mike as this area is well worth exploring, the only thing I can add is to bring your camera.....in my opinion it has some of the best coastal scenery California has to offer. danflytr
Rock fish would of been my suggestion also. You picked the right time of year because quite often highway 1 gets washed out in the winter by the rains. I will also bring good stable hiking boots and rope&tackle("cleats, large eyehooks...etc"). Jigs 3 or 4 oz; bucktails with 4" twister tail("yellow or white") hex chrome bars or if you just want to use bait squid with hooks ranging from size 4-6/0's. Gundalba
What's said above plus watch for VERY SHARP and loose rocks. I consider good leather gloves as a must on top of usu. rock fishing gear and caution. Also as Jim said, btwn San Diego to Seattle, one will have a difficult time to come up with a place with better view... Cheers,

Philan
Hello Mike, Is there any tool I could use to find out the area where the 100 fathom curve comes within 150 yards of shore? Does it show in any map or web site? I went to rockfish in/between Carmel and Big Sur almost weekly last summer but was very frustrated on fighting with the kelp and loosing my jigs especially ended up empty handed most of time. Thanks Phil Lan
Alferd Packer
Nautical Charts will show those curves. Also, one recon tool is google earth. It has the resolution to show trails and other issues regarding access
moocks
One of the best ways to reconnoiter the coast is Google earth or Google maps I suspect this is close to the area . There is a whole set of coastal photos on line also Two things in life I love. California Caster
No need to be a "Billie Goat" & risk your life scaling down cliffs or getting swept out to sea by a "Sneaker Wave" whilst fishing the rocks, also no NEED to bring your own gear....Hop on a partyboat out of Monterey ( Google Monterey Sportfishing)....July is an excellent time of year for a variety of species ie:.....Salmon, Sea Bass, Rockcod, Lingcod....Mark Fish have NO HANDS!!!....if you're getting bit, it's in the fish's month....SET THE HOOK!!!!! Philan
Thanks for everyone! Moocks' map is a big help to me. I went on partyboat out of HMB in the past years. It seems to me I was fighting with rivals who can't compete with. A good lure plus shrimpfly jig can easily attract them. I pulled out most of the fishes got hooked except several brownies because they hided into the caves right after the strike. I took my son out last year and he said "Dad, fishing in the partyboat is not fair to them". One other problem is sea sick. I never got sea sick before but starting to have it last year. This is part of life when you got more age. I took the motion sickness but not much effect.

Different water conditions between Half Moon Bay ( exposed to weather) & Monterey Bay (sheltered)....I understand the "Combat Style" of fishing on partyboats. Try & schedule your trip midweek...less crowded, friendlier groups.....Mark Fish have NO HANDS!!!....if you're getting bit, it's in the fish's month....SET THE HOOK!!!!!
