Kinky Muddler

Here's an extension of some flies I've been messing with recently using some kind of natural tail of bucktail and/or feathers and a head of "spun" kinky fiber blend hi tied and trimmed like deer hair. I started with smaller baits, like sandeels, but I'm now trying out some fuller bodied generic baitfish. I'm exaggerating the head profile to be a little fat, like a muddler minnow, to provide a little mass at the front and make the tails kick more on the strip or in current. Every time I test a fly with a denser head and a wispy tail, that tail swims and wiggles more. The purple/black is just a straight bucktail tail (two BTD collars, actually), while the generic olive and the little mackerel have bucktail surrounded 180 degrees on top of the shank by saddles -- "tented" per Mr. Davidstrout or like the upper 1/2 of a semper fly tail. Kinky Fiber is great stuff.......

Love these Jonny!!!!!!!!!!!! I know you have tied some really cool squid and lots of other stuff but this is really something special in my opinion. Tie'em up in 5" long versions in olive w/combo of dark blueish and olive saddles and these will match my bluebacks on Lanier. Cannot say enough of how much i like these. Explain how you build the head for everyone.

What a treat this is! Great looking flies and good design interaction and conversations. This stuff is both enlightening and entertaining. Jonny, great job once again. Nice transition from tail to head and the taper is dead-on. I enjoy the fact that the design is complete and does not leave any room for artistic interpretation. I am SURE that those babies swim their tail off too. GREAT!
