Stop Using WD-40 as an attractant!

I really wish people would stop spreading this rumor as gospel. According to wikipedia, the main ingredients of WD-40:

Main ingredients, from the material safety data sheet, are:

  • 50%: Stoddard solvent (mineral spirits, somewhat similar to, but not the same as, kerosene)

  • 25%: Liquefied petroleum gas (presumably as a propellant, carbon dioxide is used now to reduce considerable flammability)

  • 15+%: Mineral Oil (light lubricating oil)

  • 10-%: Inert ingredients
No one knows for sure exactly what is in it. WD-40 says it does not contain fish oil.

I constantly see on the internet(and sadly see with my own eyes) about how some fishermen leave popular sites a mess with bait bags, discarded line and beer bottles. I see all the time about how evil poachers are. How they take short fish or too many fish for the bag limits.

We rally for a fish that we all love. We want these people to stop destroying our stocks. We are happy to see rivers like the Hudson and the Housatonic cleaning up and making our fish stocks healthier.

Then, some of us turn around and use WD-40 for a reason it was never intended. They constantly introduce unknown chemicals on their lines, lures and flies without a second thought.

While it doesn't seem like much to have lures doused in WD-40, think about all the anglers up and down our coast adding it into the ecosystem. Think about all the freshwater anglers using it and their waste eventually washing out to sea.

People, WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO A FISH WE CLAIM TO LOVE! We can't harp on corporations like Omega and then damage the ecosystem because it benefits us.

I am begging you. PLEASE... stop using this product in an unsafe manner.

Millions of fish peeing in the ocean, and your worried about alittle wd40 that hits the water. There are a hell of alot more things hitting the water that are worse then wd40.

Last I checked, the environment was made to deal with fish urine. It wasn't designed to handle manufactured products.

You're right, there are a lot of things worse than WD-40 hitting the water. So why add to it?

There are worse things than rapists out there, so raping women is okay? Awesome argument.

Then we need to stop using gulp, powerbait, all atractants for that matter. We'll stop using cholrine to filter our water. Power plants should stop dumping there discharge water incase its nuclified. Gooses **** is highly toxic they should stop pooping in our water. I've seen fish kills from over population. What about the gas and oil from our boats and jet skies? The list can go on forever with stuff just as equal to wd40. Where do you want to start?

Are we talking cremation or accuall burials. Niether would be good, cremantion you have carbon, burials you'd have alot of stuff, but the caskit is sealed ain't it, so nothing would leak out.

What about all the diesel smoke from the tankers. The fish are taking in second hand smoke, thats not good for them.

no no caskit you did'nt hear about the body that was just pulled up on the e coast that a dragger got after investigation they determined that the body was buried at sea cwm31.gif *** I don't want to drag that chit upcwm31.gifkooky.gif

Didn't hear that one, nor do I want to see it. I've recovered bodies that have been in the water for a couple of days, thats enough. I couldn't imagine being burried at sea with out a caskit though. You'd have all the little fish and crabs picking at you 24/7. I think that kind of disrespecful.

Oh a continuation of "Everyone else does it, so I should be able to as well"...

Gulp, powerbait and other attractants are tested to see how toxic they are to the ecosystem.

As to chlorine, chlorine leaves the ecosystem very quickly. If you fill an aquarium up with tap water, the chlorine will dissipate within a day or two.

I can't comment on power plant discharge. Doesn't the EPA or DOE regulate this?

Goose feces and fish over population are nature's problems. Nature has been dealing with it forever.

Now, with boat engines, you do have a valid point. Engines are better now though. With 4 strokes, at least oil isn't getting burned up and spit out the exhaust.

My point is still the same. We are needlessly introducing foreign materials into an ecosystem that may not be able to handle it. Using another person's actions to justify your own pollution isn't an excuse.

How can ya comment on what WD-40 does unless you know more about it.. Do you know if it dissipates or just dillotues it self or anything.. How can chlorine a chemical that if swallowed can kill ya be better than WD-40 which Im sure if you got it in your mouth would NOT do as much harm.. beers.gifsmile.gif
