Broken Skeg - any experience replacing???

So the skeg snapped off my outboard some time ago. i never recovered the piece that broke off. im wondering if anyone has any experience with this problem? i've heard that a new piece can be welded on there, but where would i get the material???

If there is a stub remaining, you can buy a replacement skeg. Check Cabellas, West MArine and Boaters World

I ran into the same probem last year. it can be welded if you can find a good welder who will do it. some thing you need to consider is if there is enougf materal left to weld to. the skeg can probably be purchaced from your local marine parts store or prop shop. I would recomend to price a skeg plus welding fees to the price of a new or used lower unit. just my $.02

Have a new skeg welded on,is done quite often

Up here, we would have H&H propeller shop do tha type of weld, so check with your local prop shop first. There are also replacement skegs that you epoxy onto the remaining stub. Google skegguard.

we weld them all the time, not a big deal, not sure how much it costs though, if not you can look for a used lower unit, or housing, what is the motor, might not be worth it

You can buy a SkegGuard that will fit over an existing skeg, or replace it if its broken off, as in your case. It's made of 316 stainless steel and is very well made - much stronger than the original and bolts on after drilling two holes. You'll need to have at least a couple of inches left of your skeg.

I have one on my outboard for preventive protectection. Check out their website and contact them for details on how much skeg you need to put theirs on.

I highly recommend them - you can take a pretty good hit with this thing and not lose your skeg.

Brad,

The prop shop is the first place i'd go, if they can't do it for a reasonable amount just go find the guy that does the welding on some of the draggers bet he'll have you fixed up in no time.

Most good boat yards that service outboards have this done all the time,either by someone in their shop or farming it out. You also need to check the drive shaft. If you popped that skeg off you probably blew the prop which can mean a bent or missaligned shaft. I've been there and if you need a new shaft go for a used lower unit. JP

wayne tj-just something to think about-i was a marine tech for 8 years and have seen the skeg guard in use.in theory for sandy areas it works great keeping your skeg from being ground down by the sand,however if you boat in rocky areas the damage could be much worse due to the fact that stainless is far much less forgiving than the softer metal of the true skeg.i have seen a few rock impacts with the skeg guard where the true skeg actually broke just above the top of the guard due to the guard being that much more rigid.skegs are replaceable and are welded on all of the time.i personally would go that route verses using the guard just my .02 cents

I went with the cheapest, easiest option the skeg gard for like 60 bucks or so. Easily installed no evidence of damage and additional protection with its mini wing on the bottom.

I hear ya, but my outboard should lift before an impact to the SS skeg guard would break the skeg above the guard. And if that were to happen, I'm sure I'll have more problems than just a broken skeg - that's where insurance comes in.

I fish in a lot of skinny water where there is sand and rocks. With my previous boat, the skeg was all chipped on the leading edge along with the usual sand paper effect - now with the skeg guard, there is no damage after 5 seasons of use. For me, I'll stick with the skeg guard.

There are also waters that have boulders the size of trucks and if I hit them at any speed I won't have anything left of my lower unit.

no pics, i'll try to get one. as for how it happened...if you are familiar with Barlow's Landing in Pocasset..a hard WSW wind can be a real bit*h when trying to get the boat on the trailer. add an extra 800 pounds of gear and a hauler for bay scalloping and the boat is damn near impossible to stop once it starts moving. so i push the boat off the ramp, the wind catches it, i can't control the stern end and she swings right around and slams into the rock jetty that lines the pier. *snap*...ya, that finished a bad day and made it even worse... that happened about 2 years ago. i've run the motor just fine since, but i was thinking of possibly selling the whole rig, boat motor trailer and wanted to get that thing fixed.

thanks steve..there is a prop place in plymouth that i think i will call. there is barely a nub left...basicly snapped right at the top...
