Mesh Size for a Bunker Gill Net

I'm considering a gill net to catch bunker for personal bait usage.
What size mesh would be appropriate?

Thanks.

1 inch is all you need

Cast net works and you don't have to tend it and there's no bycatch loss.

I can't throw a cast net... Neck and back surgeries left me with almost no ability to twist. My spine is fused in the neck and lower back quite extensively.

1"? Is that across the diagonal?

I bought two nets about 3 years ago and I think they are closer to 2 1/2"
I need to pull them out of storage to check tem. Heck, I need to find them too

Well then good luck ith the gill net. Wonder if you need a permit for that?

Your in rhode island but here in Nj you need permits from the state and possibly feds to set a gill net, I would thinkits the same up there. Fines are huge so call your fish and game.

Been there, done that.... Wouldn't be asking if I hadn't already covered the bases.

No permit needed for recreational use.

There are regulations to follow but that is all.

Only if you were taking the bait for a commercial purpose, i.e. selling to a bait and tackle shop or otherwise.

Good Luck,

Thank you! That is exactly what I was looking for.

Would I need a license for this? I see no mention of it.

Thank you once again,
Jason

Mr. Richer,

Your request in reference to gill netting for bait has been forwarded to me.
You can gill net for bait in this state. There are a few restrictions and
you can review the regulation at www.dem.state.ri.us, go to regulations,
Marine Fisheries and go to section 10.7. This section should answer your
questions. If you have any other concerns please feel free to contact me
directly at 222-1983.

2-3 weeks ago on a popular fishing show that focuses on NE, with hosts by the name of Jay, and Andy... On a network that focuses on sports in New England... The show also owns a magazine, both prominently displayed at the RISAA show... (I am so trying not to post direct references to comercial sites/products!).

Any way that show had a skipper put out a gill net that looked more like 3 inches to get pogies (not peanuts). See if you can find that show.

Thanks!

Put a few larger panels in the bottom of the net, maybe you will get a few bass and save yourself the aggravation of fishing for them.

I'll leave that to unscrupulous individuals like yourself.
You should be ashamed of yourself for even suggesting it....
