It's a Murray mulching mower.. IT sprays a black oil residue out of the exhaust and runs really rough.. I have no background on it, it was left at the house by the previous owner when I bought it last year.. It's a 2004 and looked better than the one I had.. I figured it was left for a reason. Should I just put it out with the trash? I know nothing about small engines..

Check and clean the air filter if you haven't done that yet. If you can get the model# and make you could probably find a manual for it online if you don't have one. It should give you trouble shooting tips relative to that machine like carb adjustments. I would also add a fuel stabilizer that is compatible with 2 stroke fuel to help clean things out. Does it run poorly at all throttle positions or only wide open or at idle?

View PostStraight gas.. I replaced the spark plug but never drained it.. I'll drain it and see what happens..

If it is straight gas then you have a 4 stroke engine and oil blowing out the exhaust is bad.......................

I'm assuming it has a separate oil tank for the two stroke oil. I guess I should have asked that. It does have a separate oil tank with 2 stroke oil in it doesn't it? I hate separate tanks. Regular motor oil wasn't put in the 2 cycle tank I hope.

Black oil coming out the exhaust on a 2 stroke is normal, running poorly isn't just for clarification.

View PostTackle Junkie, My bad it's a 4-stroke. just takes gas.. No seperate oil tank for 2 stroke..

my advise would be to put it on your front lawn with a sign on it that says FREE. Most likely not worth sinking any significant money into. Especially when you can buy a new mower for around a "C" note at Sears or one of the box stores. A repair shop would most likely cost you that much and you will still have an old mower "that had problems"

Something to think about is watching the big box stores like Homies in the winter. I bought a Honda for 1/2 price in Jan 2 years ago. They had 3 mowers left that didn't sell so it was right place at the right time for me. They are doing that locally with snow blowers now. I know this doesn't help you much now as far as a lawnmower goes.....

wait a second ...

it came for free with the house

I gather you don't have another one

it runs rough and spits black oil - but does it service your grass cutting needs

if it does - who cares if it runs rough and spits black oil - use it til it dies

now when u decide on a replacement - shop wisely and don't buy another Murray (I've got a dead one alongside my driveway that I need to transport to some dumpster somewhere mad.gif ) ... these Murray's come out of HD

spend the money to get a decent unit that will last - e.g. troy-built, honda, lawnboy, etc

I have an old one that still works but doesn't mulch.. The broken one mulches.. I'm just gonna use my old one and do as Mac said and wait till winter and pick one up on sale.. I'm gonna put it out next to the garbage and hopefully someone will grab it..
