If you search 704 history you will find an article at the top of the search list that may be of interest to you.

The 704 model didn't come out until catalog #31, which is copyright 1969. The 706 came out in the early/mid 1970s. There were other Spinfisher models made earlier, like the 700.

I'm pretty sure my aunt got hers a year or two before that. And it has the solid green medallion plate, not the blue/green wave one

DJ Im almost postive that the brushed aluminum was the first sideplate.I can remember when the medallion sideplate 704 came out after mine.Dont know the year the 706 came out but I got mine arround 73/74.

She got the reel as part of an outfit. 9' custom Murat spinning rod and the 704. I inhereted both from her when he died, which is why I'm sure it has the solid green/medllion plate. I remember that we all went fishing the night of her 25th wedding anniversary in July of 1969, and she fished with that outfit that night. She got it a year or two before that.

I got my first greenie about 1971/1972. Also a green plate/medallion 704. I don't have a brushed plate 704 in my collection.

Maybe some of the shops got them in stock before the 1969 catalog went to print

Penn history is lacking on thier site,I also would like to find out.Quite possible they came out first with the grn.med.plate then changed to the aluminum plate and decided to go back the grn med.plate.I know I got mine arround 1970 or 71 w/alum.plate.

DJ checked with my friend who has a B&T and says Penn did come out with grn.med.sideplate first and changed to the aluminum sideplate for awhile and then back to the grn plate again. He couldnt remember the years that the changes took place.

Sc537, can you or someone else post a picture of a reel with the brushed aluminum sideplate?

I don't know how it worked in 1969, but new reel models actually come out in the summer before the model year, when they're "officially" introduced at the AFTMA show. Dealers can typically get their hands on 2007 reels by the fall of 2006 these days. Maybe it worked the same way back then

Also, medallion plates were around since Penn came out with the 702, so it's entirely possible that the very first 704s had the medallion.
