shipping tubes for fishing rod?

A question for anyone who may have shipped a 1 piece rod 6.5' to 7' long
where can a person get the cardboard tube? I need three badly. I should also add that I'm shipping rods to people who want to buy them from me so the cheapest way will be better.
I'm in Virginia Beach, thanks

Let your fingers do the walking to "carpet stores" in yellow pages

If your going to use cardboard, go to a carpet store. The tubes that rolls of carpet come on are pretty heavy. Personally, I would go with PVC. Four inch diameter at the Depot or Lowes isn't that expensive and won't bend.

You can also go to your local home improvement store and pick up thin wall PVC pipe for short $$ then cut to length.

I have used a length of gutter downspout also.

Carpet tubes are your best bet as it will be lighter than PVC. I brought my 11ft 2 piece heaver back from england last year in a carpet tube. It survived baggage handling through philly which is saying something!

If you have an in with a local tackle shop ask them. They often have shipping tubes from their purchases. You will also find out that the shops can often get a much better shipping rate then the public. Any general business can get a better rate. UPS wanted 65 from me to ship a 9' rod, through local business I paid 18.

I'm not sure that carpet tubes are lighter than PVC. If you get the thin walled PVC meant for drain pipe only, it might weigh less than the heavy cardboard tube normally used to roll carpet. It runs about $5-6 at Home Despot for a 10' length. DHL is proabably the cheapest shipper.. or Fedex maybe.

Yeah your probably right. I just dug the tube out and it weighed a fair amount. My problem was that in the UK drainpipes are made of the heavier stuff so a carpet tube weighed less than that option. Also it was free

walk into the local lowes or homies.. walk to the carpet section.. look up at all the rolls of carpet on the big carousel until someone says, "can i help you?".. then say, "yes nice mam or sir, could i please have a couple of those empty cores?".. they will get them for you and you will walk out the door.. my experience is that they are very thick walled to handle the weight of the carpet...

ps.. don't walk through the lamp section carrying it.. they are about 10+ feet long...

I called my nearest tackle shop, Princess Anne Dist. Co. (17th Street Tackle) in Virginia Beach, they hooked me up with two tubes for free,
