How long to soak cedar planks?

Guys,

I've got a piece of salmon and am cooking it on cedar planks tonight, never done this before. How long can I get away with soaking them before it's safe to cook?

I see some sites say 20 minutes, some say "at least four hours".....am I running the risk of screwing it up by soaking for 2 hours?

Just thought I'd follow up. I'm sure many of you have tried this but if you haven't, please do. I soaked the cedar planks for just over 2 1/2 hours, threw them on indirect heat on my gas grill, let them heat up for 15 minutes, and threw a really thick king salmon fillet on there that was coated with good mustard, little mayo, fresh dill, and a little cracked black pepper...nothing too crazy. Took a while to cook, around 20 minutes. Man, it was unreal. I surrounded the salmon fillet with a few chopped apples and the lil' lady made some asparagus and some sauteed spinach with almond slivers. Couple bottles of good white. Holy cow. First time I've ever tried it, could not have been better.

Luckily I had a big chunk leftover, and just had some cold...at 6:15am.

sorry for the late reply...The last cooking show I saw that used Cedar Planks said to soak it for an hour. It would depend of course on teh thickness of the plank. The ones they were using were about a half inch or three quarters thick. Really not a plank......
