Spearing, should be able to get it at a B&T in the area you are going.Try early AM.Have fun.

I second the spearing suggestion. However, live killies are also good...but also are a little more expensive. Also, very small metals work well, such as trout sized kastmasters, etc.

If you're going during the day, and wer'e not talking about children 6 or under, I'd go with small metals. Kasmaster, hopkins, whatever.

little strips of squid work great on small hooks too.. whatever you can get your hands on.. if you are fishing an area where there are snappers, you cant help but catch em...

good luck..

Spearing. If your fishing a cove or dock were the water isn't moving get yourself some canned mackerel from the grocery store and chum the water now and then. You'll have more snappers than you'll know what to do with.

Just remember, if you are gonna' keep some for the table, ten is the limit.

How small a rod for catching snappers?

I want to bring my daughter who is almost 5, would a small fresh water rod 1/8 - 3/4 lure rating and 4-12 line wt be ok.

I know she can handle that rod from bringing her fresh water fishing. She's a sweetie!

That set-up is perfect for snappers. Have a great time.

i wouldn't even bother with bait for those devils, just use anything shiny and metal

if theyre not too far out, you can just cast a really light weight (1/12 or 1/8 oz) and a nice shiny hook with a little bit of anything and youll catch some snappers...this is how i used to catch em as a child

Snapper popper with the plastic strip.

Believe it or not when I was young, in the 70's, all my cousin and I needed to catch snappers in montauk from the bulhead adjacent to the snug harbor hotel was a cane pole and one piece of bread. After the bread was gone we used snapper for bait. We caught and released so many snappers that our hands smelled of snapper for the rest of our vacation.
We used to catch a few small mackeral in the mix as well.

cane poles is my preferred way to snapper fish, especially with kids... so easy, no broken reels, great way to get them into fishing..
