Surf fishing Hawaii - what would you do?

I've been doing a lot of research. The folks on this site have given me some good help dialing in on charters and possible Ulua fishing trips.

I'll be in Hawaii for two weeks in October on my honeymoon, and the fiancee is setting me up with four charters. She's going on 3 out of the four.

But imagine going to an island paradise without your surf gear?


HPD's postings only make me want to do this even more.

My question to the scribes:

What would you bring?
1. Rod/reel
2. Plugs
3. Metal
4. etc...

Maybe not what you are looking for but here goes...all beaches are open to everyone all the time...and if i were going on 4 charters already and it was my honeymoon I would be doing the beaches...I snorkel almost every morning when i go to Maui and it is truly incredible...whales can be heard...turtles...the blue and red of the plankton is everywhere and with a banana and five minutes to spare you can have all kinds of fish and colors surrounding you. Something great to do together again and again.

i would take a 5"stick bait, a swimmer, a popper, and a Kastmaster in blue/chrome. tossed by something that handles fish to 20#....But that is just me.

On every exotic trip i've been on I was able to catch something with the storm wild eyes. Just bring several different sizes to cover your bases. I went to maui last year it was awesome. Be real careful of the ocean there. Its not like the atlantic. Never turn your back on the surf. I was hanging out one afternoon on the "beach" actually an old lava flow that went into the ocean watching a sea turtle fishing in the surf. The waves were breaking about 10 feet below me, until I quit paying close attention, then one came that just about washed me into the ocean. It was a cliff there and totally impossible to get back on land. I was lucky...The locals would fish remote areas at night. They caught something that looked like a really large jack crevalle. Looked really strong and like a lot of fun. My vs250 and 10 footer would have been perfect...

Was in Waikiki year and a half ago, seen a few stray bonefish caught off the jettys and the harbor was full of small talapia, cuba and jack. Seems like most of the surf caught fish are very small.

It's all bout sunning and surfing down there, the only quality fishing your gonna find is off a boat.

Take some different size plugs poppers and jigs and give it a shot. I looked into surf fishing in Punta Cana before I went down two months ago and heard it was terrible. I tried it anyway and did alright. Lots of pompano and jacks, and a few shots at schools of 15 + lb permit, and this was all after reading there isn't any fish on the beaches...



Had to throw teasers because most of the fish were blitzing schools of fry, but I had a few nice blowups and one jack on a mid-sized pencil popper.



Traded some lures to the locals for fishing info and gave them a few of the fish I caught. There was another fishing fanatic out there from Norway with his flyrod also, so he and I hit the beach often. Really nice guy, and not to mention- his Norwegian wife walked the beach with us while we fished topless every evening

Opps nevermind.. if ferret walked those sands and says there's nothing great to catch inshore then I wouldn't waste your time. He had gills in his past life

Emailed I guy through another kayakfishing site who offered my use of his extra stuff while there
I'll be with the mrs. so I figured the easiest would by to bring my 4 piece flyrod and a small mix of stuff. While she is relaxing on the beach, I could be hitting the surf . We will see how that flys
I may try to get out on a charter. I am only there for 5 days post travel.

Can't wait

I was in HI during June, stayed on Waikiki. I'd definitely bring a fly rod, there are some jetty/breakwaters to be fished, also, a nice 8 - 8.5 foot casting rod with some plastics and topwaters would be nice...

Tote the rod while you walk... stop and fish, go to a bar and have a drink. The surf onthe far side of Diamond Head looked like a good spot to wander as well.

Dude..... leave the tackle to the charters. Most likely you are Marlin fishin? Right? Enjoy the honeymoon, pack abunch of lei's and dream about us catchin 50#ers out here in MOntauk that time of year

A fairly good source told me about some bonefish flats up off of Kaneohe and some wadeable flats over on the Makaha side. Makaha would require the right wind direction to be fishable, and the word is leave the car open with nothing of value inside. Interesting side of the island. I usually take a pack fly rod but rarely take it out. Too much else going on!

Right wind ?...Makaha is offshore all day (the trades). Look out for the crackheads and don't piss off the locals...

SouthShoreCoffeeGrinder - I'll be doing 3 Marlin/tuna/reef trips, and one night shark trip off Maui.

Depending on the luggage contraints - I'll pack gear judiciously.
